Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy or SUDI, is the term used when babies die without warning during sleep. Once categorized as SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, SUDI most often occurs when infants are put down to sleep in an unsafe environment causing them to suffocate. The sad reality is that many of these deaths would have been preventable by following safe sleeping practices for infants. In this episode of Knoxville Medicine’s Doc Talk, host Rob Page, MD talks with Knox County Medical Examiner, Darinka Mileusnic-Polchan, MD, PhD, regarding SUDI and how to create a safe sleeping environment for babies. Learn the best practices for safe infant sleep and how these methods are substantially lowering SUDI rates in East Tennessee. If you have experienced an infant death due to SUDI, resources are available through the Knox County Regional Forensic Center.
