In the Old Testament the kinsman-redeemer was the closest male relative who, according to law of Moses had the responsibility to act on behalf of a relative who was in need, danger, financial trouble or whose death needed to be avenged.

In the law it is made clear that only a kinsman could redeem his relative’s property, deliver his relative from slavery, avenge murder and raise up seed (children) on behalf of his relative.

This study is a look at the kinsman-redeemer in the Old Testament and the Book of Ruth and how this was a picture of the redemption brought to mankind by Jesus.
