Advances in Oklahoma law against abortion that would prohibit procedures after the sixth week of gestation
Earlier this year, Governor Kevin Stitt signed a bill to make abortion a felony in the state
Oklahoma City, Okla. — The Oklahoma House of Representatives gave final approval Thursday to a tough anti-abortion law that bans the procedure after the sixth week of gestation before many women know they're pregnant.
The bill was approved by the lower house, where Republicans are the majority, in a vote of 68-12 without debate and now goes to Republican Governor Kevin Stitt, who must sign it in a few days. Anti-abortion laws and the restriction of LGBTQ rights are some of the actions undertaken in states led by the Republican Party, with which it seeks to broaden its base in an election year.

Dubbed the "Heartbeat Law," the Oklahoma bill bans abortions once cardiac activity can be detected in the fetus, which experts say occurs at about six weeks of pregnancy.
