Dear Marcum,
On January 29, a trucker convoy arrived in Ottawa near Parliament Hill to protest Justin Trudeau’s vaccine mandates.
This three-week "occupation" (as the mainstream media called it) was dismantled after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act.
The Act gave him the authority to freeze bank accounts, suspend vehicle registrations, and use all police resources necessary to evict the protesters and truckers from Ottawa.
The RCMP's enforcement of the Act was shocking, and so was their cavalier attitude towards many of the protesters injured during the crackdown.
In leaked text messages from an RCMP group chat, officers joked about their brutality, including towards an elderly woman in a mobility scooter who was trampled by the mounted unit.
So, I filed an Access to Information (ATIP) request to learn more about how the RCMP attempted to handle this public relations disaster.
The documents reveal that the RCMP was more concerned about protecting the identities of the officers whose messages were leaked than the well-being of the protesters — including me after an officer shot me point-blank with a tear gas canister.
All the RCMP had to do was issue a press release apologizing for the leaked messages.
But instead, they chose to cover up the identities of those involved without any consequences.
If that's how they behave when they're in the wrong, how can we be sure justice will ever be served?
