Native Americans Call Out ‘Woke’ Chamber of Commerce CEO’s Faux Apology

Neil W. McCabe, the national political editor of The Star News Network, interviewed Tony Henson, the president of the Native American Guardians Association, about why he is disappointed by the insincere apology by U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Suzanne Clark after she posted a photo of herself with two youngsters in traditional Native American war bonnets.

After the photo went viral, Clark sent an apology to her staff and then sent that apology to a Politico paywall site.

Henson told Star News Network his community is still waiting for their apology.

"She thinks that it's okay to put that out there to the world, was really, really disappointing. And, so that's why we felt that we needed to step up and hold her to account for it," he said.

Henson, whose North Dakota-based organization is dedicated to promoting the recognition of Native American heritage and fights against left-wing efforts to eradicate references to Native Americans and their heritage from America's culture, said Clark was not being sincere.

"It was not heartfelt. It was more dismissive and was just kinda hoping that she could run out the clock and just have this go away. We have a problem with that," Henson said.

Instead of trying to make the incident go away, Clark should take the opportunity to reach out to Native Americans, he said.

"We want to be able to have a dialogue with her, with the Chamber of Commerce, and find out some questions is like, what are you doing for the Native American community? What role do Native Americans have in your organization?" he said.

Henson said the Chamber of Commerce promotes itself as a woke organization, but Clark turned that upside down.

"She basically did the most unwoke thing you could do by appropriating the culture kind of in a very dismissive way," he said. "If they're going to be all about wokeness, then that's fine, I guess. But when it comes back and hits close to home, kind of the shoe's on the other foot now."

Instead of flying to Washington to meet Clark, it would be better for Clark to fly west and meet with Native Americans, he said.

"If she really wants to be woke, she could wake up at the reservation."
