Introduction

Matthew 19: 16-26

Luke 19:1-10

Both Men Had Enormous Amounts Of Wealth.

Tax Collector: He made his money by adding to tax. People hated him.

Right Young Ruler: He was more than likely a young, rich, ruler (Luke 18:18, we learn he was a ruler, “archon” in the Greek text). He was a ruler in a synagogue. He appears to be devout, honest, young, wealthy, prominent, highly respected, and influential.

Both Men Came Looking For Jesus In A Very Public Way.

Zaccheus climbs up a tree in front of everyone.

Rich Young Ruler: Mark 10: 17 17As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do so that I may inherit eternal life?”

He came running to Jesus.

He also came in public view of everyone.

He knelt before the Lord

Both Men Knew That Jesus Had The Answer That They Were Looking For

They had gone through great efforts to see Jesus.

They understood that something was missing in their lives.

Both Men Had Jesus’ Compassion Displayed To Them

Zaccheus: Jesus was seen with him even though he was rejected by society

Rich Young Ruler: Mark 10:21 tells us at this point, Jesus had such compassion on him.

Q. What Was The Difference Between These Two Men?

Zaccheus owned his sin, The rich young ruler ignored his. (PRIDE)

When the rich young ruler was confronted by Jesus he response was that he had none.

Zaccheus never needed to be confronted, he basically confessed it before the Lord.

Zaccheus saw Jesus as the Messiah, the rich young ruler saw Jesus as a teacher. (LORDSHIP)

Rich young ruler was looking to check off a “religious box”

Zaccheus was looking to Jesus Himself

Salvation is not for people who want an emotional lift, it is for sinners who need a Savior.

“What can the church do for me?”

“I am the only one who gets it”

“I am the only one who is spiritual”

Zaccheus surrendered everything to Jesus as a natural expression of faith, the rich young ruler surrendered nothing to Jesus. (SUBMISSION)

When Jesus says, Jesus said to him, “If you want to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 22But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.

This was not a call to earthly possessions are evil or a call to poverty. Jesus was challenging him, “You say you love your neighbor as yourself, then sell what you have and give it to them.

Our ultimate test is to obey God at His word. Are you willing to do what I want you to do?

Do we literally have to give everything away that we own to become a Christian? No.

We must give Christ first place in our lives.

This test for the rich young ruler proved that his love for his possessions was greater than his desire for eternal life.

Zaccheus walked away from Jesus a richer man than before, the rich young ruler walked away empty.
