Mayor Klitschko noted that this was done "not without difficulty." After several unsuccessful attempts to dismantle the sculpture, the workers sawed down the very foundation of the monument.

The monument was erected in 1982 in honor of the reunification of Ukraine with Russia. The authorities are also going to dismantle the second sculptural composition depicting the Pereyaslav Rada.

The arch of titanium in the shape of a rainbow is going to be left. However, Klitschko suggests renaming it the "Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian People".
