June 19th, or Juneteenth, celebrates the day in 1865 when slaves in Galveston, Texas were notified of their freedom. The first thing that many did when they learned of their freedom was set out to find their families. This is why Juneteenth should be “a day where we have reunions, because the family is so important in the African-American community,” says Heritage Foundation president Kay C. James. “And so, every year I want to make it a celebration where we decide: Family matters.”
