Blind snake in Brazil
Gymnophiona or Apoda is an order of amphibians that includes about 175 species, distributed in 5 or 6 families, varying by classification. They are found in South America and Central America, in Africa, and in Southeast Asia. Gymnophyons are characterized by the absence of fews. Most species have ring-segmented skin and a predominantly fossorial lifestyle, which leads them to be often confused with earthworms, with some even being called earthworm (large earthworm) in some regions of Brazil. However, they are vertebrates and not annelids. There is also frequent confusion with snakes, especially the larger species. They are popularly known by the names of cega-cega, cobra-pilão, ibicara, mãe-de-saúva, pilão and ubijara.
