Tierrasanta was originally a ranch property in the 18th and 19th century. However, in the 1940’s the land was purchased and converted into Camp Elliot, a Marine Corps training facility. A couple years later, the Navy took it over before it became inactive in 1946. The U.S. government then sold the land to the City of San Diego in 1961 and just ten years later, the community of Tierrasanta was founded.
The Elliott Community Plan was the first issued blueprint for the community in 1961, and by 1982, the new developed area included the private residential area, as well as most of Mission Trails Regional Park that we are familiar with today. Within the same year, about half of the area had completed residential development and was first called Tierrasanta Norte. By the early 90’s Tierrasanta had pretty much been fully developed.

Nicknamed “The Island in the Hills,” Tierrasanta is surrounded by canyons, and hilly terrain from below, giving the island like geography it is named after. To the west of the community is Interstate 15, and it is also bordered by the Mount Soledad Freeway and the Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar. Mission Trails Regional Park is the neighbor to the east, and in the southern portion of Tierrasanta’s neighborhood, homes have the view of the Admiral Baker Golf Course and even bits and pieces of the San Diego River.
The geography of the canyons creates some awesome natural trails of its own, which reach several peaks, and can take you through the various green belts. The constant upkeep and maintenance of the natural habitat is led by the group, “Friends of Tierrasanta Canyons.” Make sure to check out and follow their Facebook page if you’re a community member interested in servicing your neighborhood too.

Tierrasanta has one of the most tightly knit communities in the city of San Diego. They have elected members and representatives that are known as the Tierrasanta Community Council or TCC, that have responsibilities from planning community events, involvement in government issues, and plenty of more outreach.

Within the community, there are plenty of local activities and amenities for everyone to enjoy. With its one of a kind location and elevation in San Diego, the geography offers tons of hiking/biking trails through the canyons, 8,000 acres of Mission Trails, and the infamous peak of Cowles Mountain. Tierrasanta offers plenty of natural beauty.
Tierrasanta is also home to one of the largest community centers located just off of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. The center was constructed back in 1990 originally to accommodate the needs of an ever so rapid growing family community. The site includes baseball and softball fields, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, tennis courts, a gym, and swimming pool. The center also holds many youth and adult leagues, camps, and other programs for all to enjoy during the various seasons.
SCHOOLS
The Tierrasanta community has an excellent choice of schools from levels K through 12.
Within the San Diego Unified School District includes both Tierrasanta and Kumeyaay Elementary, named after our native people who first inhabited the area. Tierrasanta Elementary’s current principal is TES alumni herself, so just another great example of how tight knit the community is. Both elementary schools offer plenty of extracurriculars suchs as clubs, spanish immersion courses, and music for all kids to enjoy before, during, and after school.
Canyon Hills High School, originally named Junipero Serra High School after the Spanish missionary who founded Mission San Diego and many other settlements across the state of California, was founded back in 1976, and recently changed the name in March of this year.
Along with their new mascot, the Rattlers look forward to coming back from the pandemic with a brand new look! Featured in our previous episode, the Rattlers continue their rivalry with neighboring Patrick Henry High School in 2021.
