Chicken Coop for a Small Flock | Chicken Coop Tour with Tips & Tricks

We built this small chicken coop two years ago and it’s been great, but there are a few things I would do differently if I could do it again. Let me give you the grand tour, go over the pros and cons of this design, and share some tips and tricks that’ll I’ll likely implement the next time I go about building a coop.

There are many chicken coops similar to this style but I did not follow a plan other than my own when I built this. At around 20 square feet of usable space inside the coop it’s big enough for about 10 birds. I’ve had more in here but it starts to get crowded at that point. The top of the nesting box is about 48” above the ground so my wife, who was not blessed with great height, can see in and gather the eggs without a step stool. As my kids get older and can gather the eggs on their own

It’s easy for me to nitpick things I don’t like about the coop since I built it and I know all its flaws and imperfections but it has been a fine structure and kept our flock safe and dry for several years now. There are also a few improvements and modifications I plan to make in the future, like adding power for a light to help with wintertime egg-laying. I did my best to cover all that in this video but if you have any questions drop them in the comment section below.

In the future we plan to build a mobile chicken coop on a trailer frame so we can implement our chickens into our rotational grazing plan for the livestock. We may also build a larger shed-type coop, but that project is pretty far down the road and a lot can change between now and then. Make sure you’re subscribed if you’re enjoying this content because there’s always something exciting going on around here. Thanks for watching!
