Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces $65M housing investment for Winnipeg economic reconciliation project

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau takes part in an announcement in Winnipeg with Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) Grand Chief Jerry Daniels and Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson. They announce that the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) building in downtown Winnipeg, which closed in November 2020, will be transferred to the SCO and converted into a mixed-use development project under Indigenous leadership. The project will include 300 affordable housing units for local First Nations members. The federal government is investing $65 million through a fund via the National Housing Strategy, while the Manitoba government will contribute $35 million. HBC governor and executive chair Richard Baker, Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman, and federal ministers Patty Hajdu (Indigenous services), Ahmed Hussen (housing and diversity and inclusion) and Dan Vandal (Prairies Economic Development Canada) also take part in the announcement.(April 22, 2022)
