Debian To Consider Changing How It Treats Closed-Source Firmware - Phoronix

What else is there other than SystemD? 3 or 4 others, including: runit, Sysvinit, OpenRC, and GNU Daemon Shepherd...

Why should you care? SystemD, some have argued, is bloated and needlessly complex to work with (I barely understand it, tbh). The others are lighter and simpler.

SysVInit descends from Unix System V, and was replaced by upstart on Ubuntu, then supplanted by SystemD about 10 years ago, and pretty much everyone but Gentoo uses it, now, as Gentoo developed OpenRC, which sits on top of SysVInit. There is another, the ShepherD (GNU Shepherd Daemon), which was initially developed 20 years ago, abandoned, then picked up again in 2013. Not sure if it is being actively developed now or not.
