What’s Driving Urea Supply Shortages and What Experts Expect with DEF Pricing
High Demand Among Agriculture, Factory Shutdowns Leading to Higher Prices
In the early months of 2021, experts stated that spikes in urea prices were driven by greater demand in the agriculture industry and more prevalent use among diesel-engine vehicles.
Although price increases during the spring planting season isn’t uncommon, the 2021 spikes came earlier and have occurred more frequently than the past seven years.
As a direct result, experts predict increases for Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) will follow suit, much as they have this year as prices for finished lubricants have hit.
Composed of 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionized water, DEF is injected into the exhaust stream of diesel engines, breaking down harmful NOx emissions into nitrogen and water vapor. Because of its high content with urea, and the higher quality of urea it takes to manufacture DEF, the prices of urea most often drive the cost of DEF.
“Not only will fertilizer be delayed by these shipping restrictions, but additional fertilizer needed to complete spring applications may be unable to reach farmers at all. By placing this arbitrary restriction on just a handful of shippers, Union Pacific is jeopardizing farmers’ harvests and increasing the cost of food for consumers.”
CF Industries informed its customers located on UP that railroad-mandated shipping reductions would result in nitrogen fertilizer shipment delays during the spring application season. The company also informed customers that it would be unable to accept new rail sales involving UP for the foreseeable future.
UP on April 8 told CF Industries that it would have to reduce its shipments by nearly 20% as part of the railroad’s plan to reduce congestion in the midst of crew and locomotive shortages.
CF Industries said it will ask the Surface Transportation Board to intervene so that fertilizer shipments are prioritized.
“CF Industries’ North American manufacturing network continues to produce at a high rate to meet the needs of customers, farmers and consumers,” Will said. “We urge the federal government to take action to remove these Union Pacific rail shipment restrictions to ensure this vital fertilizer will be able to reach U.S. farmers when and where they need it.”
The fertilizer company said it was one of only 30 shippers to face restrictions designed to unclog the UP network. CF Industries ships to customers via Union Pacific rail lines primarily from its Donaldsonville Complex in Louisiana and its Port Neal Complex in Iowa. The rail lines serve key agricultural areas such as Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, and California.
Affected products include nitrogen fertilizers such as urea and urea ammonium nitrate, as well as diesel exhaust fluid, an emissions control product required for diesel trucks.
CF Industries is the largest producer of all three products in North America, and its Donaldsonville Complex is the largest single production facility for the products in North America.
CF Industries says crop yields will be lower this year if farmers are unable to secure all the nitrogen fertilizer that they need. This will likely extend the timeline to replenish global grains stocks and contribute to higher food prices, the company contends.
UP sent an email to customers earlier this month outlining the railroad’s goal of removing 15,000 private cars from current inventory.
UP is pulling nearly 3% of railroad-owned cars from the system. The railroad has said it will work with customers to avoid plant shutdowns and other potential negative impacts.

Meanwhile, many British glasshouse growers didn’t go ahead with their normal January crop plantings, because of high gas prices, and the lack of workers.
At the other side of Europe, there are reports that about 70% of all Bulgarian greenhouses for vegetable production didn’t produce crops this winter due to high gas prices,
leading to a lack of home-produced tomatoes and cucumbers on their domestic market.
Greenhouse owners in some other EU countries have depended on state aid to continue production.
The seismic move toward omitting some gas appliances comes as the California Energy Commission retools state building codes for energy-efficient homes.
It's an expansion of the state's first-in-the-nation mandates requiring solar panels on all new homes starting last year.
The agency now plans to tighten rules on natural gas for home heating and hot water, a code update that would take effect in 2023.
Environmental groups want a complete ban on natural gas in new homes,
but the state commission has signaled that isn't likely right now. Officials instead in the coming months are likely to use incentives to urge developers to pick electric options for heating, like heat pumps. More muscular requirements could come later.
