If you, an SSI claimant, were unable to pay for your own rent or mortgage, your shelter, after being disabled, and a friend or family member provided you a safe shelter, until you get back on your feet financially, you will want to properly document if that shelter provision is "loaned" to you to reimburse later, or an outright gift where you don't mutually intend to pay it back (as in a "gift"). The former will mean it is not counted as income against your SSI, while the latter, the gift, means it will be subtracted from what you are paid in SSI. Here is what you need to know, to make sure you are not dinged for In-Kind Shelter 'income' that was a loan and not gifted in-kind income. Take care of this consideration when you start your claim if you can, instead of trying to after you prevail. SUBSCRIBE NOW to be alerted to updates to this information or related content.
