H.P. Lovecraft was one of the first. He took psychological horror and cosmic weirdness and blended it in a concoction of suspicion and noxious fear. He gave us the Ancient Ones, the dreaded Cthulu, Azathoth, the shoggoths, and the Necronomicon.

Lovecraft's influence can be felt throughout science fiction and horror tales. Creators such as Stephen King, Robert Bloch, August Derleth, Mike Mignola, and J. Michael Straczynski have all followed in Lovecraft's footsteps.
