Homemade Nail Polish Remover - Non-Toxic and Acetone Free
Using fingernail polish can be a great way to have pretty fingernails and hands. When you’re thinking about painting your nails you should always consider the chemical products involved, especially when it comes to fingernail polish remover. Fingernail polish remover is an easy and quick way to remove finger nail polish.
Is it safe though? The answer is quite simple: No.
Most fingernail polish removers contain toxic chemical products, such as formaldehyde, toluene and phthalates. These chemical products were found a long time ago in fingernail polish remover and can cause problems such as cancer, asthma and problems with the reproductive system.
No wonder the smell is so strong when you walk into the salon.
Another ingredient that’s very common in fingernail polish remover is acetone. Acetone is very dangerous because it’s flammable and powerful enough to dissolve plastic. The concentrated power of acetone when in contact with your skin can cause reproductive problems and make your organs toxic.
So, because of this silent danger that we face without even realizing it, we came up with a recipe for a natural fingernail polish remover:
Ingredients:
- 1/3 of a cup of organic apple cider vinegar;
- 3 drops of grapefruit essential oil;
- 3 drops of sweet orange essential oil;
- 7 drops of lemon essential oil;
- 1/3 of a cup of isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol.
Instructions:
First, start by pouring a cup of organic apple cider vinegar in a small bowl. Apple cider vinegar is great for several reasons. It has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, which help fight the development of bacteria on your nails.
Next add the essential oils. The grapefruit, sweet orange and lemon essential oils are all acidic. The acid is what helps remove the fingernail polish. Furthermore they also contain other attributes. Grapefruit and sweet orange essential oils are natural antimicrobials, for example. Lemon essential oil is also great, since it helps prevent bacteria, providing our skin with vitamin C. It also contains d-limonene which is an antioxidant that helps keep your nails healthy, as it removes the finger nail polish. The last step is to add the isopropyl alcohol and mix it well with all the other ingredients. Isopropyl alcohol is a natural substance made up of ethanol or ethyl alcohol, but it should only be used topically, never consumed. After mixing all the ingredients, you can use your natural finger nail polish remover.
Here is how to use it correctly:
Soak a cotton ball in the solution and start to rub it on your nails. It may take a little bit longer then it would with acetone, but with patience, you can obtain the same results. You can also soak your nails in the solution for 20 seconds and then use a cotton ball to wipe them off.
When you're done, wash your hands with warm water and soap, and apply lotion on your hands and nails because the acidity could dry them out a little bit. You can also use coconut oil to hydrate your skin and fingernails. Store the rest of your product in a small jar or container.
Now that you know how to remove your finger nail polish without acetone, it's time to try out this natural fingernail polish remover and start taking better care of your fingernails!
