Keeping the digestive system in working order requires some maintenance. Otherwise, we can experience constipation. It actually affects about 20% of American adults. This condition occurs when waste spends too much time in the colon. Consequently, the colon continues to extract water from the waste.

Some people instantly reach for commercial laxatives for relief. It may be easier to address the causes, which are usually lack of fiber, inadequate physical activity, IBS, and dehydration.

In today’s video we’ll look at how certain foods can prevent constipation.

Apples

Apples are one of the best organic ways to treat and prevent common constipation. Apples are a great source of natural fiber. The apple’s skin is rich in soluble fiber as well as other essential compounds that create a natural laxative effect. This makes it much easier for your digestive system to keep things moving.

The rich supply of pectin in apples bulks up the stool and activates elimination. Apples also contain sorbitol, an insoluble fiber. This type of fiber acts as a laxative.

Eating 2 – 3 apples – along with the skin – should provide all the fiber your body needs to promote regular bowel movements and thus, improve digestion. A glass or two of apple juice is also effective.

Here are a few recipes you may want to try:

1. Apple and Pear Juice
Pears also contain sorbitol. So when combined with apple juice, the drink will help alleviate mild constipation.
Chop 1 apple and 1 pear into small pieces
Place the chopped fruit into a juicer
Blend well
Pour into a glass and drink

Repeat the process twice daily: once on an empty stomach, and again one hour before you go to bed.

2. Apple and Prune Cleanse

Just like apples and pears, prunes also contain a hearty supply of sorbitol which acts as a laxative. The properties in the prune’s exterior can trigger the intestines to move. Prunes also increase fluid to soften stool and is a great remedy for chronic constipation.

Instructions:
Combine equal amounts of prune and apple juice
Stir well and drink

Drink at least 3 – 4 glasses daily. If taken for long timer periods, your bowels may become accustomed to it.

3. Apple Sauce

A small amount of applesauce is also a quick remedy for adults. A word of caution: consuming too much applesauce can actually cause stool to become too firm.

Try this recipe for relief
Ingredients
1 cup applesauce
1 cup unprocessed wheat or oat bran
1 cup prune juice
Mix well

Consume 1 – 2 tablespoons, followed by 8 ounces of water
Repeat daily for 2 weeks. It can be refrigerated or frozen.

You can follow this procedure daily for 2 weeks. If you don’t have any improvement, gradually increase your consumption to 3 – 4 tablespoons.

How long does it take for apples to Treat Constipation?

This depends upon the individual. If you don’t see significant relief within a week, consult your physician.
Once you eat an apple or drink apple juice, follow up with at least 8 ounces of water. And be sure to eat the apple skins.

Other Precautions While Treating Constipation:

As you increase fiber intake, you may experience bloating, but it’s usually temporary.
Consume plenty of water or juices all through the day
