7 Common Foods You Should NEVER Reheat

Sometimes we have leftovers from dinner the previous night. Maybe a guest didn’t show up for the get together or you overestimated your own appetite while you were cooking. Most of us have already learned how not to waste food, and sometimes the meal is just that good that you want to keep a little for the next day.

But, it’s important to note that not all food is good to be kept and reheated in the oven or microwave. The truth is that sometimes heating up leftovers can be poisonous.

Watch out for these next seven foods:

1. Potatoes

If boiled potatoes are kept at room temperature they can allow bacteria to grow very quickly and cause an intestinal infection. It’s always better to keep boiled potatoes in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to go back for seconds, they can always be heated up in the microwave or in the oven.

2. Onion, garlic, and beets

These three are frequently used in soups. If you want to reheat soups, under certain conditions, toxins can be released. This happens because of the nitrates that these vegetables contain. Repeatedly reheating them can even release carcinogens.

3. Mushrooms

The protein structure of mushrooms and foods like them is altered when they are cooked and can change so much that they turn harmful. Keeping mushrooms at room temperature is also not recommended because they can release certain toxins if they aren’t correctly stored. It’s better to eat them all at once and/or store them no more than one day in the refrigerator.

4. Rice

Rice? Exactly. Reheating rice can also make you sick. If it’s left out of the refrigerator, bacteria that causes intestinal infections can start to form. To avoid hours of diarrhea and vomiting, you should always store rice in the refrigerator in a sealed container. Like that you can reheat it without any fear of illness.

5. Oils

Certain oils become rancid quickly. These oils include: walnut oil, hazelnut oil, grape seed oil, and avocado oil. If you’ve already used one of these oils to cook or fry something, reheating the food can release harmful trans fats. Truthfully, reusing oil to fry food more than once can cause damage to your health.

6. Eggs

Scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, and all other kinds of eggs should never be reheated. Doing this can cause uncomfortable symptoms in your digestive tract because of the high amount of protein that eggs contain.

7. Chicken

Just like eggs, chicken contains a lot of protein. Heating it back up and eating it can cause a stomach ache, vomiting, or diarrhea. If you really want to reheat your leftover chicken, make sure that it’s completely cooked and that the middle is hot. Ideally you would eat it cold in a salad (shredded or in small pieces) or on a sandwich.

It’s better to keep plates made with these seven ingredients in the refrigerator, or maybe to decide not to eat them as leftovers the next day. The best option is to only cook what you’re going to eat each day.
