Cabbage leaves have been used for decades as a low-cost, natural remedy to treat joint pain and inflammation.

Everyone knows that they’re supposed to include cruciferous vegetables such as arugula, cabbage, cabbage and watercress in their diets. In fact, the frequent consumption of these vegetables provides you with nutrients and is associated with a lower risk of cancer, heart diseases, and even thyroid problems.

However, you probably didn’t know that they can also be used an anti-inflammatories, did you?

Take cabbage for example. It’s rich in phytonutrients, anthocyanins and glutamine, as well as antioxidants whose anti-inflammatory properties make it an excellent remedy for joint pain. So, cabbage leaves have been used to make homemade wraps to relieve joint pain.

It sounds weird, doesn’t it?

After all, how is a cabbage leaf wrap supposed to help relieve joint pain?

In a study performed on people suffering from stage 2 or 3 knee osteoporosis the researchers divided the participants into groups who then received different treatments. The groups treated with the cabbage leaf wraps recorded that they felt less pain after only 4 weeks of treatment.

Another study performed in China showed that people with a higher consumption of cruciferous vegetables experienced significantly reduced inflammation in comparison to people who avoid these vegetables. The wrap is really easy to make. All you need are a few cabbage leaves and some olive oil.

Start by steaming the cabbage leaves for 10 minutes, until they feel soft. Alternatively, you can boil some water then put the cabbage leaves in and turn down the stove, leaving them to sit for 10 minutes on low heat. While they’re cooking, massage some olive oil into the area with circular movements. After 10 minutes take the cabbage off the stove and blot them on some paper towels. Let them cool off just enough to where they won’t burn your skin, then place them on the area with the olive oil. Cover the area with a heavy towel to trap the heat inside.

It is recommended that you repeat this process an hour later with fresh leaves.
