How to Make Dog Stairs | DIY Plywood Dog Steps

I wanted to build a simple and inexpensive (cheap) set of steps for our little dog, Cody. He’s getting older and with the slick laminate floors in our house he has a hard time jumping up into bed. My intent was to make something functional and meant for real use in my real home, and I’m happy with the final product.

With lumber and plywood prices still through the roof these may be the most expensive dog steps ever constructed. Thankfully I built these using 100% scrap materials left over from other projects. Some of the plywood wasn’t in the best condition either, but a little wood filler, primer, and paint can solve quite a few problems.

This is a very straightforward and simple project. Begin by breaking down all the material, then assemble, sand, and finish how you like. I sanded the inside of the stair assembly prior to putting it all together and then sanded the outside after assembly. I filled any voids in the plywood with wood filler, and then finished with primer and antique “country white” paint, followed by several coats of Minwax Polycrylic on top. When painting plywood primer really helps prevent that grain from showing through, especially with white paint.

There’s always plenty of room for improvement and this project took me much longer to complete than I want to admit. However, my intent was to make something functional without breaking the bank. I’m happy with the results.
