Vanity Publisher, Traditional Publisher, Self-Publishing Company, or Self-Publisher, which one?

There's much debate on which style of publishing is best. It often comes down to something as simple as who is the more connected and influential and who is an unknown, with the only option being self-publishing, but what do you think, and have any of you fallen foul of the notorious Vanity Publishers?
