Storing Vegetable Harvest For Winter, Introduction to Root Cellar

You can start by storing vegetables in your basement. Yet that alone isn’t enough for winter. Before you build a root cellar, this introduction helps you with planning.

How many calories will you need? Will you get tired of eating the same food all winter? What else makes vegetables last longer?

A big harvest in the spring and fall can provide for your family all winter. It doesn't make much of a garden to fill up your basement, root cellar, or pantry. The key is practice and organization to get the most from your vegetable harvest.

Should you build a root cellar or cold storage first? Not necessarily. It is best to start with what you have, then build up from there. Maintaining winter storage is more than where you store vegetables. It takes practice and patience.
