Police arrest suspect in New York subway shooting 'without incident'

Frank James, a person of interest following the subway shooting in Brooklyn on Tuesday, recorded numerous videos on social media attacking different racial groups.

The 62-year-old, who New York authorities are actively searching for, made videos predicting a race war between Black and white people. He also made threats and derogatory statements against Black people, white people, Jewish people and Mexicans.

In his latest uploaded video on April 11, 2022, James admitted that he has wanted to watch people die and insisted he has been through a lot in his life.

SUNSET PARK, Brooklyn (WABC) -- Police are searching for a person of interest in connection with a subway attack in Brooklyn Tuesday morning that left at least 29 people shot or otherwise injured, shaking a city already unnerved by a sharp rise in crime.

A "mumbling" lone gunman in a reflective vest and a gas mask threw smoke bombs into a subway car in Brooklyn and then began shooting at the height of the morning rush, with the manhunt continuing into the evening as new details emerged in the probe.

None of the injuries were considered life-threatening. Authorities said a magazine jammed in the gun, which possibly saved lives.

Tuesday evening, the authorities identified 62-year-old Frank R. James as a person of interest in the investigation and released a photo at an NYPD briefing led by Commissioner Keechant Sewell.

Police did not answer questions about the individual who called in the tip, though the Associated Press and CNN are reporting the suspect was the one who tipped off police to his location in lower Manhattan.

Mr James will be charged on several counts, authorities said, including the violation of a federal law which prohibits "terrorist and other violent attacks" against mass transit systems. He could face life in prison if found guilty.

He had nine prior arrests, police said, and he had ties to Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The search for Mr James was complicated by malfunctioning cameras inside the subway station. Officials on Wednesday were working to determine whether one or multiple cameras at the station were broken.
