The Land of the Living

If there is any son of Adam’s to whom Psalm 27 applies, it is that thief on the cross. Forsaken by the world in every possible way, he is trapped in a moment of raw finality. There is no chance to distract his spirit, to be blinded to eternity by the mundane trappings of life; instead, he is hanging in that moment between mortal injury and last breath. His own folly has led him unto death, and his neighbors have despised him on a cross. Indeed, he would have fainted, sundered into hell, but the Lord took him up; and, on that day he saw the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
