Why You NEED a Chicken Saddle for your Hens

“Sometimes roosters are just buttholes.” Having a rooster in your flock has a few benefits but there are also drawbacks, one of them being that he can rub the feathers off a hen’s back. If you have a rooster that’s hard on his favorite girls then a chicken saddle might be the perfect solution for you!

In our experience roosters have two main goals in life: 1.) To be fruitful and multiply and 2.) Make your life as difficult as possible. Sometimes there’s significant overlap between the two! When chickens breed the rooster will mount the hen and do his thang. If he has one or a few favorites then over time he can rub the feathers off the hen’s back. A chicken saddle helps protect your hen by providing a barrier between the rooster and the hen.

You can buy these saddles but if you or someone you know is skilled with a sewing machine they can be made pretty easily for just the cost of materials (thanks Aunt Deb). We bought one saddle and used it as a template for the others.

Let’s be honest with each other for a minute. The days of Larry the Lavender Orpington are numbered. He’s a pest, he’s hard on the girls, and he wants to flog anything that moves. We’ve tried to love the hate out of him but if he’s going to be a jerk to our kids he’ll be in the soup pot. If that interests you, then subscribe to the channel! We hope to see y’all on the next video!
