Communion
o Many denominations practice Communion in different ways…
• Closed vs. Open Table
• Transubstantiation – Consubstantiation – Symbolic
• What is it called?
o The Lord’s Table – The Last Super
o Eucharist - Greek eucharistia, meaning 'thanksgiving,'
o Communion
o Origins/Context – PASSOVER
 Most sacred holy feast in the Jewish Calendar!
 Commemorating the Jews deliverance from the 10th plague in Egypt
• Exodus 12:1-50; Lev. 23:4-8; Numbers 28:16-15; Deut. 16:1-8

1 Corinthians 11:23-32

23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in REMEMBRANCE of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the NEW COVENANT in my blood. Do this, AS OFTEN AS you drink it, in REMEMBRANCE of me.” 26 for as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the lord's death until he comes.

27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. 31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.

7 C’s of COMMUNION

1. Communion is a COMMEMORATIVE MEAL!
o Remembrance and Proclamation of what Christ HAS DONE!
 GOSPEL – Jesus’ Death & Resurrection
 Passover is a commemorative meal! (God’s Deliverance from slavery)

2. Communion is a COVENANT MEAL!
o Jesus’ death and Resurrection ushers in a “New Covenant”
 Covenant – Binding Agreement (Between God and man).
 The “Old Covenant” 613 – Is not discarded or replaced; it is FULFILLED
• Matt. 26:27-28 “27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”
• Mark 14:23-24 “23 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24 And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.”
• Luke 22:20 “20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.”

3. Communion is a CHRIST CENTERED MEAL!
o Communion is all about JESUS!
 Transubstantiation – Consubstantiation – Zwinglian Remembrance – etc. …

4. Communion is a COMMUNITY MEAL!
o Communion is really only celebrated with the Communal Body!
 This was also true of Passover – Every pronoun and verb in Plural in 1 Cor. 11

5. Communion is a CONTINUAL MEAL!
o “As Often As” – “Whenever” you observe this -[[[Monthly for Us]]]-
 The Early Church made observance of Communion part of their weekly worship practice as a part of the “Love Feast” which was a full meal!

6. Communion is a CONTEMPLATIVE MEAL!
o “Unworthy Manner” (selfish, sin, unbelief, indifferent) & “Examine Self”
 Communion in a time for self-reflection and Even self-judgment (Confession)
 NEVER CONDEMNATION (Romans 8:1)
 Judged & Disciplined by Lord – TO ESCAPE CONDEMNATION!

7. Communion is a COMING-HOME MEAL!
o Christ Jesus is our Coming King – His return is Imminent
 Those of us who believe “Come Home” for supper w/ Family in Communion!
