Building Raised Garden Beds from Salvaged Material // 2022 Garden

The 2022 gardening season is here and we are building some budget raised beds from salvaged materials found on the farm! With lumber prices skyrocketing again using reclaimed boards allows us to keep the cost of this project down. We’re committed to doing a better job in the garden this year, so if you want to follow along be sure you’re subscribed to the channel!

We are building these beds from salvaged deck boards. The previous owners of our property owned horses and used these boards as their fence. Since we own dairy goats and not horses this fence won’t work for our needs, so we are replacing all of it. We have piles of these boards that need to be used. You need to exercise caution if you’re using treated wood in a garden because up until about 20 years ago (2000-ish) wood was treated with an arsenic compound (Tip: Arsenic is bad for you).

Most people use 2x lumber for their garden beds but lumber is crazy expensive at the moment. Since deck boards aren’t as thick as 2-by’s we’re reinforcing the sides with stakes. You can purchase the stakes we used at the Amazon Affiliate link below.

We’re building most of our beds at 3.5ft x 9.5ft. We don’t expect these beds to last forever, so when they ultimately need to be replaced we’ll use 2x12s and get a full 4x10 beds.

Coming up soon we’ll be filling these beds with soil – doing so as CHEAPLY as possibly – and then it’ll be time to plant. Please subscribe to the channel if you want to see how everything goes!
