How Did This Large Wildflower Meadow Handle The Heavy Rain?

See how good design makes a difference. It was windy and rainy the day before. Will this wildflower meadow make it?

These wildflower beds contour across a large hill at the Sustainable Homestead Institute. The weekend previous wind and rain pounded the beds, but they didn't wash away.

Beds have shallow tillage on contour, except the top half of beds. Deep tillage on the upper edge of beds on contour works like a swale. Water can soak into the ground, spreading out rather than running downslope.

Water that moves downslope will build up speed, drawing away more soil. Your first job on any small farm or homestead is to keep soil in place. The right design prevents erosion.
