Walk Across Canada To Raise Awareness For PTSD - April 13, 2022 - Micah Quinn
A man is walking across Canada to raise awareness of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The name of his walk is called Sea To Sea For PTSD. Chad Kennedy worked with the Alberta Sheriff Highway Patrol and in July of 2020 he was a part of a group of first responders at the Columbia Ice bus tragedy where three people were killed and 14 were injured after a vehicle lost control on the road to the Athabasca Glacier.
Two weeks after Kennedy responded to the accident he said he noticed there was something wrong with him, “There was no way to describe or explain anything to myself or to any of my friends and family. I knew exactly what was going on, but I couldn’t explain it.”
Kennedy said in his darkest hour in 2021 he realized he needed to do something about his PTSD. He receiving help from the Workers Compensation Board, a psychologist and an occupational therapist.
He was also accepted into the Newly Institute, which is a mental health clinic in Calgary. Now Kennedy is making his way across our country.
He is making the trek from Cranbrook B.C. to St. John’s Newfoundland which is over 6,500 kilometres and the trip will take around 30 weeks to complete. Kennedy says he’s walking across Canada to show first responders and veterans that it’s okay to seek out help for mental health issues.
“When you’re going through this post traumatic stress demon and living with it everyday you feel like you’re alone. Ever since we stepped off in Cranbrook last week, right up to this point the support of the communities we pass through has been outstanding. They have embraced us. The support of our emergency services, and the talks I’ve had with police members, fire departments, B.C. Ambulance Service, Alberta Health Services. Everything has been overwhelming, but in such a great way.”
Kennedy says he will be making a stop in Lethbridge on Good Friday at 8am to meet with first responders to talk about his story
