Discussing feeding the horses through winter and training the dog to coexist with the horses.

When I'm present I can get the horses to co-exist and feed together.
Banjo has lost a little weight and Ruby is battling to keep weight on. They have adlib hay and I'm feeding them some oats when I feed the older horses to give them some extra calories. It's been cold over night, we get frost and the horses haven't been in frost before, so it's just presenting a bit of a challenge for Banjo and Ruby. I will have a better idea of how to manage them next winter.
During winter the horses will shiver overnight and this causes them to use up more fat reserves, so they require more calories at a time that pasture is the lowest. So making hay available is the best thing for them and some hard feed if hay alone isn't enough.
