Officer Andrew Delke Gets 3 Years For Shooting An Armed Black Car Thief - Is This Good?
Judge sentences ex-officer 3 years in death of Daniel Hambrick after chaos erupts in court
Friday, July 2nd 2021
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Chaos erupted in the courtroom Friday morning during a plea deal hearing for ex-Nashville police officer Andrew Delke as he pleaded guilty in the on-duty shooting death of Daniel Hambrick.
Delke pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter Friday. He was previously charged with murder. Judge Monte Watkins sentenced Delke to three years in jail.
Hambrick's mother became very emotional, yelling and screaming at times over the loss of her son.
“Because of you. I lost my son because of you. I hate you. I don’t accept your apology,” she screamed while pointing at the former Nashville police officer.
Hambrick's mother urged the judge not to accept Delke's plea deal and at one point knocked over a podium, heading in Delke's direction.
"I am against the way the state and the defense joined hands to protect this racist, biased, anti-Black criminal system. My son was murdered on video," Daniel Hambrick's mother cried out.
Delke had to be rushed from the courtroom during the disarray.
Hambrick's family left the courtroom and joined protesters outside, chanting: "No justice! No peace!" and "We didn't get a [expletive] chance!"
Daniel Hambrick's mother could be heard wailing in grief: "I want my baby!
Delke's lawyer David Raybin says he's seen emotions in court but "not quite at that level" and called the case "highly emotional."
"They were given the opportunity to speak, but it turned into a riot," Raybin said, adding that the outbursts were "alarming."
Reading a statement in court, Delke said he took responsibility for the death of Hambrick.
“I recognize that what happened on July 26, 2018 was tragic. Mrs. Hambrick lost her son that day and I am responsible for her loss. These are facts that I will have to live with for the rest of my life. And no mother should ever have to experience the loss of her child and not a day has gone by that I have not thought about my actions. I also recognize that my actions impacted the community and the police department. I hope this case can contribute positively to the much-needed discussion about how police officers are trained and how we as a community want police officers to interact with citizens. I am deeply sorry for the harm my actions caused and I hope that Mr. Hambrick’s family will retain some comfort from my acceptance of responsibility and my guilty plea today.”
With credits served, Delke's lawyer said he's likely to spent one and a half years behind bars.
