Jesus is the Light of the World. Most people have experienced the fear of darkness, bu you can choose to let Jesus light your path through life as you'll discover in this inspired story.

I was at a remote cabin near the boundary waters canoe area in Northern Minnesota with a terrible cough that would not stop. I had medicine and my flashlight in my car that was about a half mile away on a skinny snow-packed trail through the forest. The temperature hovered near zero, the sky was pitch black and I had only one book of matches to light the path.

I lit the first match and started toward the car, but ten yards later, the wind grabbed the flame and darkness swallowed me making the cabin, the trees and the trail merge into one overwhelming color; deep black. Another match, ten more yards, the wind, then raw cold and penetrating darkness. The half hour ordeal, one match at a time, finally brought me to my car with only one match left.

I’d like to focus on the power of each tiny light that lit my way forward. It didn’t matter how heavy and overwhelming the darkness seemed, because with each match, I was able to see ahead. Oh, the joy of light in the darkness.

Is there any wonder that Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” And speaking of light, imagine God’s joy in his very first act of creation when “God said, ‘let there be light,’ and there was light.” Gen1:3NLT And guess what! “God saw that the light was good.” Gen1:4NLT

Sometimes there are days, months or even years when our lives seem heavy with darkness or hopelessness. The weight of our circumstance can cover and hold us down; smother us like a giant thick blanket.

But sooner or later – perhaps in the very end – God’s light will prevail. More than lighting a path in the woods, Jesus is the light of the entire world. More brilliant than the sun, more promising than tomorrow, more satisfying than anything we could ever want or need on this earth; Jesus is our light.

He is our hope today and our ultimate hope for the future. Let’s close our eyes for just a moment and then reopen them! Oh – the light. Jesus is our light!
