UPDATE -- Mail service has resumed, according to Garvins. She sent me this statement on Wednesday, April 13:

"Delivery services have resumed for the 1300 block of 14th Street, Santa Monica. Conditions on the route will be reviewed continuously to ensure the safety of our employees. Our continuous, reliable service is a hallmark of USPS and we appreciate the understanding and support we’ve received from the Santa Monica community while we navigate this issue. The Postal Inspection Service is aware of the issues that caused the temporary suspension of delivery and they are in consultation with the Santa Monica Police Department. Since it’s an active investigation, no other details can be shared."

"You've got mail!"

Well, if you've got mail in part of Santa Monica, you may have to go grab it yourself from the post office.

You may have seen the headlines that the U.S. Postal Service is suspending mail service to a Santa Monica neighborhood. I was curious about it too, so I reached out to Natashi Garvins, the media spokesperson to USPS in LA County.

"In response to the matter involving delivery services in Santa Monica, over the last several months, we have had three separate incidents in the 1300 block of 14th street in Santa Monica involving three separate letter carriers," she told me. "For the safety of our employees, we have had to temporarily suspend delivery of mail to these customers. However, mail is available for pickup at the Main Post Office located on 7th Street. This is an unusual, but necessary step to protect our employees."

In this quick video, we discuss the Santa Monica Police Department's somewhat different account of events to its knowledge. In fact, the department said it learned about the USPS decision through Twitter.
