Since ancient times, the name Tavrika (Greek: ταυρικῆ) has been fixed for the peninsula, which originated from the name of the oldest tribes of the Taurians who inhabited the southern part of the Crimea.The modern "Crimea" became widely used only after the XIII century, presumably after the name of the city "Kyrim", which after the capture of the Northern Black Sea region by the Mongols was the residence of the governor of the Khan of the Golden Horde. It is also possible that the name "Crimea" came from the Perekop isthmus (the Russian word "perekop" is a translation of the Turkic word "qirim", which means "moat"). During the existence of the Genoese colonies of Taurida (1266-1475), the peninsula was called the Office of Romania, as well as Genoese Gazaria, by the middle of the XV century, due to the large number of Armenians, who by 1400 accounted for 2/3 of all inhabitants of the possessions of the Genoese Republic in the Crimea, the peninsula in the sources of that time began to be called Maritime Armenia.
