The greatest Nazi treasure ever found

Certainties fascinate our imagination. We love watching movies about treasure hunters like Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider. We like to participate in scavenger hunts. As children, we read stories about pirate treasure buried on an isolated island.
Modern legends claim that there are Nazi treasures hidden in remote mountain lakes or secret tunnels. Most of these legends have never been proven true.
However, there is one case where a huge Nazi treasure was actually found. At the end of World War II, the US Army discovered a huge treasure trove of gold in the abandoned mine near Merkers, Germany.
On April 4, 1945, the US army advanced north of Frankfurt towards Merkers, a small town of less than 3,000 inhabitants. In Merkers, slave workers warned them about the Nazi treasure, hidden in the abandoned salt mine.
The Americans descended into the mine and found the vault door worthy of any central bank. Rumors seemed to be true, so they quickly blew the door open. Once the smoke cleared, they got the surprise of their lives.
In the underground room, they found a huge treasure, consisting of:
8,307 gold bars;
fifty-five cases of gold bullion;
3,326 bags of gold coins;
sixty-three silver purses;
a bag of platinum bars;
eight bags of gold rings and teeth;
3,682 bags of German currency;
eighty bags of foreign currency;
twenty-seven paintings by Rembrandt.
The underground room was twenty-three meters (seventy-five feet) wide and forty-six meters (151 feet) deep.
Experts from the US Treasury Department and the Bank of England valued the gold at USD 262,213,000 (nearly four billion dollars in today's value). The silver was worth 270,469 USD (about four million USD in today's value).
At today's prices, gold bars alone would be worth over six billion dollars.
The Nazis needed gold to pay for raw materials and machine parts for their military industry. They needed tungsten from Portugal for projectiles and armor-piercing bullets. They needed chrome from Turkey for the manufacture of tanks and aircraft. The high-quality oil needed as fuel for Nazi tanks came from Romania. Sweden supplied ball bearings, which were key parts of the machine.
Portugal, Romania, Sweden and Turkey did not accept German currency. They took only gold. However, German gold reserves were very low.
To solve the problem of insolvency, the Nazis resorted to looting on a grand scale.
The Nazis stole the gold reserves of Austria, Czechoslovakia, Belgium and the Netherlands. The total value of stolen gold worth today would be over nine billion dollars.
The Nazis also looted valuables from private companies and Jews. No precise figure for the total value of stolen assets is available.
Nazi Germany stored the gold of the occupied countries in the central bank of Berlin. But heavy Allied bombing of Berlin forced the Nazis to move the gold to a safer location.
They transported all the gold and banknotes by train to the Merkers salt mine, 400 kilometers southwest of Berlin. In addition, Heinrich Himmler, the SS chief, requested that his looted treasure be stored in Merkers. The treasure was hidden 600 meters deep.
Conclusion!
According to the data, the Nazis looted over nine billion dollars worth of gold (in today's value) from central banks. At Merkers, Americans recovered less than half of that gold.
