The Imperial County Agricultural Commissioner, Carlos Ortiz, recently released the Imperial County Agricultural Crop & Livestock Report that ranked Imperial County in the top 10 of 58 counties in California of the leading agricultural producers in 2019.

The top 10 commodities in 2020 were cattle, alfalfa hay, leaf lettuce, sweet corn, Bermuda grass, Romaine lettuce, carrots, sugar beets, head lettuce, and broccoli.

The Desert Review sought the help of the Imperial County Farm Bureau in reaching local farmers. As a result, farmers were interviewed in four areas of the top 10 agriculture commodities in Imperial County.

Blake Plourd and his father, Jeff Plourd, of El Toro Land & Cattle, talked about the cattle industry at the feed yard in Heber. Pat Dockstader, P&T Enterprises in Calipatria, showcased the hay industry. Larry Cox of Lawrence Cox Ranches in Brawley, talked about the lettuce off-season at press time. Ryan Mamer, of Five Crowns Marketing, provided a tour of the newly planted sweet corn seeds at a field north of Brawley.
