2024 RORC Transatlantic Race Start Lanzarote Sunday January 07, 2024
The 10th edition of RORC Transatlantic Race started in superb conditions outside Marina Lanzarote. Flat water, 10 knots of breeze and 20 degrees of air temperature provided spectacular sailing conditions for the start of the 3,000 mile oceanic race. However, the diverse fleet is well aware that two vicious low pressure systems to the north will bring feisty conditions, should any of the international fleet choose the ‘high road’ across the Atlantic to Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina, Grenada.
Both the Multihull and Monohull starts got away clear with Jason Carroll’s MOD70 Argo (USA) crossing the start line just ahead of Alexia Barrier’s MOD70 Limosa (FRA). Half an hour into the race, Argo and Limosa were overlapped in the zone around the turning mark at Puerto Calero. Argo held off Limosa to retain the lead, but not for long; the breeze faded and Limosa briefly took pole position. As the wind accelerated, Erik Maris’ MOD70 Zoulou found an extra gear to pass Limosa at 17 knots of boat speed and challenge Argo for the lead.

Global Sailing Highlights World on Water Jan 05.24 ARKEA ULTIM CHALLENGE Starts Sunday, RSHYR winner
Highlights of what happened globally in the sport of sailing in the last 7 days.
It starts from Brest France this Sunday, the ultimate race around the world, by six, 32 meter, (105 foot), Ultim trimarans. Like the Vendee Globe, it is a solo skippered, Non-stop race around the world, in these foiling, massive beasts. Solo, you can tame a 60 foot Imoca, but the 32 by 25 meter, (105 by 75 foot), giants is another thing. Imagine sailing Comanche by yourself! And it's bigger than that, as six French supersailors will attempt this, the hardest race in Sailing. We wish them the best and we will comer the race over the coming days.
This is your weekly Global Sailing highlights show, the World on Water, for January 05, 2024. Welcome to our 14th year of producing these weekly programmes.
Five of the six trimarans are in the starting base in Brest, and the missing yacht, SVR Lazartigue, is busy with late boat work and was put back in the water yesterday and is on it's way to join the rest of the fleet for Sunday's start.
The 2023 Melbourne to Hobart Yacht Race, started in sunny conditions on Port Philip Bay, with competitors set for a quick race to Hobart.
The fleet started the 51st race, in a steady 13 knot southerly breeze under blue skies, but an eerie sea fog rolling over Point Nepean, enveloped the boats soon after the start, reducing visibility for competitors and crews alike, as they made their way to the first turning mark near Shortland Bluff.
Alive, owned by Phillip Turner, and skippered by Duncan Hine, is the 2023 overall winner of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. The Reichel Pugh 66, arrived in Hobart on 28th December at 3:19:04 p m., to become only the second Tasmanian boat to have their name inscribed on the legendary Tattersall Cup, not once, but twice. Alive, chose the same strategy as the maxis at the front of the fleet, and headed east out of the Sydney heads, aiming to get around the worst of the storm fronts, and harness the best of the easterly wind, a decision not without its concerns for skipper Hine.
Last week was a very busy week on the Swan River Perth. and the crew at Ironbark Photos were working overtime filming all the regattas. Here is a sample of their work.
It was the Invitation Race for the 2023 Mirror Nationals, being hosted by the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.
The brisk sea breeze got the Mirrors onto the plane, making for very enjoyable racing.
What a difference a day makes, today there was a strong sea breeze gusting up to 20 knots on the Swan River, for day 2, of the Skate Nationals.
There was plenty of speedy spinnaker action, and the planks had quite a work out upwind, to keep the boats upright.
Day 1 race 1 of the Cherub Nationals were sailed on the Swan River Perth.
It was perfect weather conditions for the Cherubs, bright sunshine and a 15 to 20 knot easterly breeze enabling the course to be set straight across the river.
The crews were eager to get off to a good start, and they didn't disappoint with exciting spinnaker rides everywhere.
The world's best light weight men Windsurfer L T riders, raced off against each other over the short Slalom course, set right in front of the South of Perth Yacht Club.
There was furious action, with a big crowd watching on the shore.
The 78th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race will go down in history as a relentlessly demanding test of determination, as well as physical and mental resilience. The record will highlight a tooth and nail fight to the finish for Line Honours, and a Tasmanian boat joining the select few to have achieved two overall wins in the event’s near eight decades.
For both the overall winner, Philip Turner’s 66 ft (20-metre) Alive, and the 100 ft (30.5 m) line honours victor, Christian Beck’s LawConnect, tactical skill and awareness was a major factor alongside sheer endurance.

ARKEA ULTIM Challenge Race Around World. #2 (Eng) 6 32m Foiling Catamarans. French Sailor Superstars
Saturday, in the Brest, Arkea, Ultim Race village, highlighted the strong bond between the skippers, and the public
With a big storm set to blow in off the Bay of Biscay the race village, of the ARKEA ULTIM CHALLENGE – Brest, had to be closed at 15 hundred hours this afternoon, but not before the six solo skippers were formally introduced to a big, passionate, and knowledgeable crowd, which surrounded the stage at the centre of the village.
For all that the weather gods sought to throw a damper on the holiday atmosphere, the crowds turned out in big numbers to meet and greet the solo racers, most of whom, will return to their friends and families for a couple of days before the final build up to the start next Sunday, 7th January.

Highlights of what happened globally in the sport of sailing in the last 7 days.
It is always good to watch the start of the Rolex Sydney Hobart and we start this week's show with the Rolex video.
This is your weekly Global Sailing Highlights Show, the World on Water, December 29, 2023.
The highlight in sailing in 2023 was definitely the IMOCA class and their build up to the Big One, the 2024 Vendee Globe, solo, unassisted, race around the world. The pinnacle of our sport or as some say, the Everest of the Seas.
No other event can come close to the Vendee Globe and it makes superstars of the solo sailors. Be watching the World on Water as we upload Daily reports, in English, of this famous French race.
We now present their end-of-year review.
The 11 teams competing in the 2023-24 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race began Leg 4 of their circumnavigation from Fremantle, Australia.
The fourth leg is divided into two stages, with the first part sending the fleet on a 2,500 nautical mile course around the south of Australia, up to Newcastle New South Wales. This race is set to be a real test with breezy conditions predicted.
“Because of the weather conditions from the beginning of this race, it’s looking to be quite a tough start," noted Deputy Race Director, Dale Smyth. "Traditionally here there are a lot of southerlies that blow, so it’s quite a hard beat right down until the fleet gets past Cape Leewin.
It’s the pre-Christmas tale with a very happy fairytale ending for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, who signed off their 2023 sailing season in style with a blistering display of up-range, heavy-weather-sailing, on an angry looking Bay of Angels, albeit, with a relatively flat sea-state, and gusts upward of 20 knots at times.
And to end the 2023 sailing season they had, "righting" practice, as they rolled to boat in. Again!

2023 RSHYR Maxi Battle is ON Law Connect v Andoo Comanche Can they Win Both Line and Handicap prizes
The gruelling and unpredictable conditions have ensured that a record-breaking course time is out of the question for this edition of the legendary 628-mile offshore race, however speculation is rife that one of the current leaders could lift double awards. With the smaller boats being strongly penalised by light winds and bunched up along the coast, and the line honours contenders having stretched more than 100 miles ahead of their closest trailers U R M Group, Moneypenny, and Alive, they could be on track to clinch the win on handicap as well. Both yachts have been consistently travelling at more than 20 knots, but with a light south or south easterly set to move in this evening, progress on the final 200-mile stretch could be laborious.

Day 2 Rolex Sydney Hobart Race Maxi Fight For Line Honours No Rum Rebellion In Hobart This Year
Here is the latest on the Rolex Sydney Hobart.
LawConnect, has thrown down the gauntlet in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht-Race, by taking the race lead from defending Line Honours champion, Andoo Comanche, this morning.
The fight for Line Honours in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht-Race, is turning into a veritable arm-wrestle with the two front runners swapping the lead twice this morning.
At 12.45pm, Andoo Comanche, was back in front and 2.6 nautical miles ahead of LawConnect, that had only taken the lead from Andoo Comanche, a few hours earlier.
Andoo Comanche, and LawConnect, were respectively 134, and 144 nautical miles, east of Flinders Island, in the 628 nautical mile race.
Both were sailing east of the rhumb line, - Andoo Comanche, at 28.7 knots, and LawConnect, at 26.8 knots.
The tussle between the two maxis has been a thrilling one, in conditions that have pitted them and the remaining fleet of 95 against rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls.
Behind Andoo Comanche, and LawConnect, the race for third place had also seen a change in positions.
Moving into third, from fourth place, was U R M Group, the R P 72, owned by Anthony Johnston, and skippered by Marcus Ashley-Jones.

The Red Sea served up stunning conditions again last Tuesday in Jedda Saudi Arabia, with blue skies, sunshine and a solid 14-17 knots of north to north-west airflow, – the predominant wind direction in the region at this time of the year. Crucially, the sea-state was bumpy with localised waves at up to 1.2 metres and an underlying swell off the Jedda Corniche that produced 1.2 to 1.4 metre rolling swells.

They say in yacht racing that when conditions are light, flukey and difficult to predict, it is all about keeping a cool head and avoiding the big results. Italian sailors are renowned for excelling in this as they are the prevailing conditions around the Italian coast line, so it was little surprise that in the 5-10 knot northerly that was blowing over mountainous Lanzarote, two out of three of today’s winning boats at the 44Cup Calero Marinas had Italian tacticians: Michele Ivaldi on Aleph Racing and Vasco Vascotto on Peninsula Racing.
The fourth day of the FAREAST 28R European Sailing Championship in Limassol presented challenging weather conditions right from the start. In the morning, it became apparent that there wouldn't be sufficient wind for racing. Following a brief adjournment, a window of opportunity emerged, and a 4-6 knot sailing session took place. During this time, the wind intensity increased, adding an extra layer of complexity to the competition. At the only completed race, Sergei Kostevitch's Bravo finished first, followed by Par Svardson's Happy Yachting, with Jonas Svensson on Drake taking the third position.
The 44Cup Calero Marinas, the final event of the 2023 44Cup, has become a two horse race going into the final day. Once again today the star performers among the high performance owner-driver one designs were Aleph Racing and Team Nika, both winning races and, crucially, the only teams to avoid posting any big results. They currently are on 25 and 29 points respectively with the 2023 44Cup’s overall leader Nico Poons’ Charisma third on 35.
The 37th America's Cup Preliminary Regatta, Presented by Neom is about to start. Who will win the last AC40 face-off?

Sailor Paul Goodison stated that the tea's focus was on the 75 and would only think of "Jeddah" as they got on the plane to fly there.

After 16 races sailed in this first round, there was no shortage of heart-pounding moments. From 600 meter comebacks, to protests, to failed mark roundings, ripped sails, and even a man overboard situation, this last round had everyone on the edge of their seats.
Each round will see half of the teams progress until we are left with one winner being crowned the Nations' World Champion.
In this round, due to 2 teams not being able to make it to the venue, two teams got a lucky break and were put forward to the 16 race Finals.
On day four of the Transat Jacques Vabre race on board Malizia - Seaexplorer, Boris and Will, deployed a scientific instrument called a drifter buoy, off the coast of Portugal at 37 degrees North. The device will live for around 700 days and autonomously sends data on atmospheric pressure, sea temperature, and ocean currents, to scientists on land. This data is crucial for the World Meteorological Organization, and for climate scientists, to better understand the future of the weather, and the role the Ocean, plays in climate change.
More drama ensued on the penultimate day of the 2023 Fly! ANA Yokosuka, Miura Windsurf World Cup as two more eliminations were completed for the Men’s and Women’s fleets in winds ranging from anywhere between 8-28 knots - with the stronger wind being in the morning like normal before slowly dropping.

The training has begun in the near-perfect conditions of Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with Alinghi Red Bull Racing being the first team to train on the crystal waters of the Red Sea. As an opening shake-down sail, this was electric and all credit to the Swiss for being the first team operational at their Jeddah base, on the Obhur Creek.
In this video, Pip explains how she's feeling, ahead of the start of the Transat Jacques Vabre. Unfortunately she had an incident at the start which has cost her a time penalty. She sailed Medallia inside between the start line distance marker, and the starting boat.
The Clipper Race is 70 foot yachts crewed by paying novices, with professional crew, and it is the experience of a lifetime. It is currently closing in on Cape Town from their stopover in Brazil, and here are the latest onboat reports from Qindao, and Dare to Win.
Hervé and Jean-Yves have not bought a ticket back to France, nor reserved a cargo ship ro transport their Class40, and for good reason. They are the first crew from Martinique in the history of the race, so the two friends are going home, aboard their Martinique, Tchalian, the old, yet solid, Manuard designed number 104, that they chartered and took over in September.
It’s a truly international picture in the 37th America’s Cup at the moment with the teams training hard around the globe. Watch Ineos Britannia, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, and Alinghi Red Bull Racing update us, in this latest recon video from Jeddah, Barcelona and Cagliari.

NEWSFLASH Transat Jacques Vabre. ULTIMS to Start, IMOCAs held La Havre, Ocean 50/Class 40's Lorient
Report #3 TJV huge weather system holds IMOCAs Le Havre.
There has been a huge announcement from the management of the Transat Jacques Vabre as a deep depression which yesterday required the modification of the race for the Class 40's has accelerated and deepened and will hit the west coast of France and Portugal, 24 hours earlier than expected. Winds of 80 knots and seas of 10 meters are forecast from Monday evening at Cape Finisterre.
Only the Ultims, which should be quick enough to be South of the systems, will race their course as planned. Their start and their course are unchanged.
The Ocean Fifty will also start today but will like the Class 40's head towards Lorient. The biggest problem for the 40 IMOCAs is there is not a port on the Atlantic coast which could accommodate the 40 sixty footers and so they will remain in Le Havre until the weather system is passed.
Keep watching the World on Water channel for race updates.

On a day when many would have looked at the sea-state and opted for a ‘maintenance day’ it was all systems go at Emirates Team New Zealand who were determined to take their AC75 ‘Te Rehutai’ out to experience conditions that the team haven’t sailed before in Barcelona in an AC75. For the team it's now relocate to Auckland before the next event in Jeddah.
This is your weekly Global Sailing highlights show, the World on Water, October 27, 2023.
On some days conditions can be marginal for a committee to lay on yacht racing. Today at the 44Cup Alcaidesa Marina there was nothing marginal about the wind strength on the Bay of Gibraltar. Despite the first warning signal for the opening day of competition being brought forward by an hour to 1100 CEST, already at 1000 conditions were exceeding the maximum 25 knot limit for RC44 racing to take place.
This is the start of the 44th edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Partnered by Rolex since 2002, the event is considered one of the world’s most beautiful and challenging offshore races. An international fleet of 110 yachts from 26 countries are contesting the 2023 race. Following today’s start from Grand Harbour, Valletta, Malta, competitors will tackle the 606-nautical mile (1,122 kilometres) course which comprises an anti-clockwise circumnavigation of Sicily before finishing back in Malta.
Ironic after a day blown off as severe gale force winds battered the nearby Rock of Gibraltar, day two of the 44Cup Alcaidesa Marina started with barely a breath of wind. Fortunately, right on queue just before the appointed midday start time, the wind on the Bay of Gibraltar suddenly and forcefully kicked in with an offshore breeze stabilising at 13 knots from 280 degrees.
Trained at the Olympic school in the south of France, Erwan Israël boasts an eclectic career and track record, cruiser-racing, match racing, Figaro, circumnavigations of the globe, his experience is diverse and extensive! Dabbling in everything, this discreet sailor is also a formidable competitor. A fine tactician, an extraordinary trimmer and a seasoned helmsman, Erwan Israël has managed to carve out a niche for himself among the very best, both on the water and on shore. Indeed, for several years, he’s specialised in navigation and weather route-ing, to the point that he’s become one of the great experts in the domain. Since 2019, as part of Gitana Team, when he’s not at sea, racing as a crew,
Kitefoil World Series Italy reached a crescendo of drama as the top 10 men and women contested the new Medal Series format in the south of Sardinia. Ultimately the pre-event favourites, Max Maeder and Lauriane Nolot, prevailed to win gold in the men's and women's events, although there were plenty of twists and turns along the way.
All day long the thermal sea breeze was fighting a battle with the stronger offshore Mistral breeze, which made it very hard to set a fair race course. It also made it very difficult for the riders and their caddies to choose the right kite for the ever-changing conditions.
Days 3 and 4, the Bay of Algeciras had a complete change of complexion for the penultimate day of racing at the 44Cup Alcaidesa Marina with the southerly wind initially non-existent, then slowly filling in to 8-10 knots. Going into the final race of the final day of the 44Cup Alcaidesa Marina, just two points separated the top four boats and, with nine points on the table, mathematically any of the top six could still win. Added to this was the venue with a third day of racing from a third direction – the east, blowing across La Linea. Crossing the line the Ceeref team was ecstatic complete with fist pumping and high-fiving. This was the first event win for the 2017 and 2019 44Cup Champions since Oman in February.

After a three-week refit, the Imoca Holcim-PRB was relaunched in Brittany. The end of the year promises to be busy for the GO CIRCULAR project, which will line up for its next race on November 26, Retour à la Base.
It is a qualifying race for the Vendée Globe, the transatlantic race between Martinique and Lorient in Brittany, and it will bring together a dense fleet of nearly forty monohulls.
Nicolas Lunven will set off alone at the helm of Holcim-PRB for this 3,500-mile course. The skipper of the Swiss 60 footer is looking forward to getting to grips with the machine he'll be taking around the world next year for what will be one of the biggest challenges of his sailing career: the Vendée Globe, a non-stop single-handed round-the-world race without assistance.
Anticipation hung thick in the air as the final unfolded against the backdrop of the levante wind, lending an electrifying atmosphere to the climax of the GWA Wingfoil World Cup. Chris MacDonald wasted no time unleashing a barrage of colossal tricks, setting the stage for a compelling battle to secure his world title in Tarifa.
Emirates Great Britain strategist and Women’s Pathway ambassador Hannah Mills reflects on the progress made in Season 3 and reveals what’s coming up for the program in Season 4.
Looking back at Season 3, - there were loads of milestone moments for the Women’s Pathway. Seeing France’s Manon Audinet take on flight control in Singapore showed big progression and is definitely what we are striving for - to see more females getting time in different roles on board the F50s.
The Brits are enjoying seeing more of them about as they work their way up the Imoca ladder. “It’s really cool,” enthused Hare who, has chosen to remain based in the UK with her Medallia - sponsored team located in Poole Harbour. “That’s because we are all promoting the sport within the UK and we are giving British fans more things to watch and to engage with. We’re increasing the popularity of our sport through a broadened reach,” she added.
