Trying something I saw on instagram. Someone was showing how to assemble claws together before they even made a collet. Strange and wrong but I wanted to try it out anyway. Almost my entire career I have often been given designs to replicate using stones that the customers already own and want to use. It very rarely is a straight forward thing to achieve. With this in mind I thought the Aqua' ring would be fun to make but using a large cushion shaped Topaz I have. The Aquamarine rings collet has completely straight sides that match the stone so the challenge was to make a ring the looks the same but fits my Topaz that has very rounded sides and belly. I wanted to show that with a little thought, most technical challenges can be overcome. I show in detail every stage of the ring being made up to the point of joining the completed collet to the shank. You learned something from this video?? In this video I show you the simple way us professional jewellers work on rings set with heat sensitive stones. You do not need any expensive or special heat proof substances. This technique is tried and tested many times over many years and has never let me down. Before working on jewellery its essential you have at least some basic knowledge of precious gemstones and how they may react to heat, acid, shock, ultrasonicing etc to avoid causing accidental damage. Platinum is very hard wearing which is a great quality for a long lasting piece of jewellery however it means that going from a hammered and filed piece of metal to a completely smooth and highly reflective polished piece of metal takes a great deal of work. The grease mop that we use to remove scratches is the most important thing here I believe. With out doing a thorough job you will never achieve that glass like smooth reflective finish. I always keep a 10x loop at the polishing motor for checking the pieces i'm working on. You learned something from this video?? Something that never seems to get mastered as different stamps have their own ways they like to misbehave. V-Claws are basically a flat corner claw for gemstones with a sharp corner. (princess cut, pear shape etc) In this video I explain and show the methods used to create one. Being able to hand make a good 4 claw is an essential skill for a jeweller. It can be made as an earring, a pendant or ring setting so its very versatile. Not too difficult but as always working neatly and accurately are very important. I think the ability to make one the exact size required for a specific stone may be the tricky part for someone trying for the first time. A piece I've wanted to make for a while, a miniature human skeleton in silver. Starting with the spine, the literal backbone of the piece, will allow me to more easily judge and hand make the other body parts to the correct scale. I want the finished piece to look realistic but ease of production is important to me so some parts will be simplified versions from the actual anatomical structure of a human skeleton.
