The Boardgame Mechanics Review Cabanga!
#JasonReviews #boardgamemechanics #news
In Cabanga!, players try to get rid of their hand of cards as quickly as possible — but ideally without picking up penalties along the way.
After the row cards and starting cards in all four colors have been placed in the middle of the table and players each have a hand of eight cards, the round begins. Players then take turns placing one card next to the matching row card in the middle, ideally with as small a difference as possible because the larger the number gap, the greater the chance that the other players will call out "Cabanga!" and throw cards with the values between the two number cards to the active player. These thrown-in cards are placed on the discard pile, then the active player must draw the same number of cards from the penalty pile.
When a player has no more cards in hand, the round ends and all players count the points on their cards. As soon as a player has collected 18 points, the game ends and the player with the fewest points wins!

It's 1977. You're an up-and-coming musician, dreaming of making it big with your band. Over the next few months you'll rehearse, play gigs, write songs, and promote your band. With careful planning and a little luck, you'll earn the most fame and become the best new artist of the year.
Designed by Jackie Fox (member of the 1970’s rock band "The Runaways", four-time Jeopardy! champion, and designer of the narrative adventure trilogy The Adventures of the Chubby Slugz) and illustrated by Jennifer Giner, Rock Hard: 1977 allows games for groups of between 2 and 5 players, from 14 years old, in games lasting about 45-90 minutes.
Rock Hard: 1977 is played over a maximum of nine rounds, each representing a typical day of one month in 1977, from April to December. You win the game by accruing the most fame. How? Increasing reputation, chops and songs; achieving production, performance, and publicity bonuses; getting record deals and earning royalties; playing concerts; and hanging out at the hottest after-hours spot. Ready to live like a rock star?

The Boardgame Mechanics Review La Familia Hort
#JasonReviews #boardgamemechanics #news
Granny Hortensia, owner of the lands of an eccentric farmer's family, dies one day without leaving a will. One night, the moon turns reddish, and the grandmother reappears as a ghost to put her four grandchildren to the test. She will visit them three times, always coinciding with the red moon. After her three appearances, whoever has become the most experienced farmer will inherit all her land.
Money, water, and fertilizer management is the key to winning La Familia Hort, with your goal being to have the most experience points after Granny Hortensia's three visits. The game is played in rounds, and each round has five steps determined by the active round card:
Market: crop, utensil, and animal tiles are drawn from the pile of the indicated type.
Purchase: each player can successively buy one tile from the market.
Fertilizer: each player receives a fertilizer counter from the bank to place it on their own crops or on the rivals' crops, depending on which round they are playing.
Watering: players place one water counter per crop or animal tile. Available water varies depending on the weather each round.
Sale: products are sold in exchange for coins and experience points. Crops that have been completely watered must be sold. The fertilizer is used to get the highest sales value in this step.
The game goes on through rounds until the third red moon round card appears, and consequently, Granny Hortensia makes her third visit.

At the Office is a roll-and-write game in which you roll five dice, choose a result, and assign it to a member of your team on the score sheet. When the active player chooses one result of the roll, it becomes unavailable to others. You need to consider the big picture and manage your team to score as many points as possible and win the title of Boss of the Year. Grab some pencils and dice, and get to work!

INGSOC 1984 plays the same as At the Office, but with players now trying to organize new recruits for the political party by placing them in their ideal position. Make a good team, or you will be vaporized. The great brother watches you.

Bacon is a fixed-partnerships climbing game for 4 or 6 players that is all about going out early as a team. The only team that will score is the team that goes out first, but their score will depend on when the rest of the team goes out. If your team does NOT go out first, your job is simple: make the other team go out as late as possible.
The rules also include the Applewood variant for 3 to 6 players: this is the no-partnerships version of Bacon. There are no teams; it’s every person for themselves. Your score will depend solely on the position you go out so go out early.

9 Lives is a trick-taking game where players compete to earn the most points. The game uses 3-4 suits which show the color of the cards on the rear.
Players make bids of if they will win 1-6 tricks, and can bid exactly or a range. Each number may only be bid up to two times. Points are earned when a player hits their bid and lost if they miss it.
The game is "must follow" with a fixed trump suit. The winner of a trick also takes one of the cards played to the trick other than theirs to place in their hand.
The game ends after either 4 rounds or a player has earned 9 points, and the player with the most points wins.

Theme & Story
In a lush valley blessed by spirits, a tribe of summoners thrives in abundance. In gratitude, the tribe commits to a sacred duty: sending summoners on a challenging journey to forge bonds with powerful spirits.
This quest is far from simple. Each summoner embarks on their own path, engaging in rituals and facing competition from their peers. Only the most skilled can complete this formidable summoning challenge.
Summoners, it's time to bring prosperity to our land. With the spirits' blessings, begin your journey and embrace your destiny.
Goal of the Game:
The 1st player to successfully summon all 3 of their Spirit Cards wins the game. If no one can summon all 3 of their Spirit Cards and players agree to end the game, the player with the highest score win the game. Points are allocated as below: King: 6 points each; Queen: 4 points each; Jack: 2 points each; Wooden Coins: 1 point each.
Gameplay:
In Piri Piri Summoners, players begin by selecting a wooden sculpture as their game piece and preparing the deck with Spirit and Active Playing Cards, along with Wooden Coins. The game unfolds in turns where players strategically collect cards for summoning, trap and bait their opponents, win territories and mana, and finally summon their spirits.
The core challenge lies in summoning Spirit Cards by adhering to rules of suit and number strength, with the ultimate goal being the first to summon all three of their Spirit Cards, using strategy, resource management, and tactical placement to emerge victorious.

Aquatica is a deep, but easy to learn family engine builder about underwater kingdoms.
In the game you will become one of the mighty ocean kings, struggling to bring glory to his realm. To win the game, you need to capture and buy locations, recruit new characters, and complete goals; each of these actions gives you victory points at the end of the game. To do so, you need to play cards from your hand (each with a unique set of actions) and combine them. Don't think it's simple! With a good strategy during your turn, you can take up to ten actions in a row.
You will encounter plenty of mysterious ocean creatures and take them to your hand. With their help you will explore the unknown locations and raise found resources from the ocean depths to your kingdom. Mechanically this is represented with the help of three-layered player board and the unique mechanism of card-rising.

The Boardgame Mechanics Review Doomlings

Somewhere on a doomed and distant planet, life has emerged, competing for supremacy until the world’s inevitable destruction. The object of the game is to score the most points by the time the world ends. Score points by playing Traits for your Doomlings’ species, making them more adaptable, resilient, and mischievous. As your Doomlings assert their dominance, Catastrophes will befall the planet, causing setbacks for each competing species. When the third Catastrophe inevitably strikes, the world ends, and the Doomlings with the strongest set of traits gets to look the Apocalypse in the eye and declare…“I scored the most points!”
Throughout the game, players draw Trait cards from a community pile, and then play them for points. Traits can also have special abilities and bonuses, allowing players to build a wide range of winning combinations. The game is played in rounds, using Age cards, which have different rules that players must follow. But be warned, hidden in the Ages are Catastrophes: special rounds with adverse effects that force players to adapt their strategy.
Doomlings adds a fun twist to hand management, by introducing the “Gene Pool” mechanic. Your Gene Pool is your hand size: it is unique to you, and it can increase or decrease through special Traits, or even Catastrophes. Doomlings includes 6 colorful Gene Pool counter cards, elegantly tracking how many cards you should hold at the end of your turn. There are opportunities to increase your Gene Pool (hand size), which can give your species a leg up by providing a larger pool of Traits to select from each turn.
A lightweight card game for 2-6 players, Doomlings can be played casually amongst friends, or competitively by the gaming enthusiast family. Because there are no duplicate cards, and Age cards are chosen randomly, no two games are ever the same. While the game itself can be learned in 5 minutes or less, don’t be fooled: with 100+ unique Traits—in Red, Blue, Green, Purple and Colorless—and rare, powerful Dominant Traits, there are countless combinations of play to be discovered.
A typical game takes between 20-45 minutes, depending on the number of players and sequence of events. Advanced-play expansion packs are also available, including a Hidden Objective expansion for a fun twist to the game. Doomlings requires no dice or additional pieces, just a jolly embrace of the inevitable end of the world!
