The Berlin Wall was a concrete barrier built by East Germany in 1961 that divided East and West Berlin. It was a powerful symbol of the Cold War, physically and ideologically separating communist East Germany from democratic West Germany. Standing 12 feet high and stretching nearly 100 miles, it was fortified with guard towers, barbed wire, and patrolled by armed soldiers to prevent East Germans from defecting to the West.
