Is it because of my genes which my doctor said he wished he had when I recovered so quickly and thoroughly this year from my third cancer operation? Was it because I laughed my way to health, or is it because of these niche-type accomplishments as a lifelong social justice advocate? In my memoir, The Color of Time, I tried to assess how five generations of our white and Black family dealt with my 1953 interracial marriage to Charlotte Cochran, a close friend, confidant, and civil rights activist/model of Martin Luther King, Jr. With our two children, we faced outright bigotry and cruelty. As a result, our activism for racial justice became our identity as we walked on the streets of the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology in 1951, and a Master of Social Work in social group work in 1958. I used nonclinical group work skills in running inner city community centers. When I served as the program director of the Washington Houses Community Center in East Harlem from 1962 to 1976, members of the Black Panthers and Young Lords attempted to replace my authority. When they learned of my social justice activism, they claimed credit for “revolutionizing me” and left the center. During a riot after MLK Jr.’s death, I spoke with a violence-prone gang whose members I knew well. When they told me they would turn over a police car, I told them I would hate to have to visit them in prison. The vehicle remained on four wheels. In 1980, I co-founded the Neighborhood Self-Help by Older Persons Project and was its CEO and fundraiser for 16 years. N-SHOPP helped foack and Hispanic senior citizens groups in several areas of the Bronx. Our self-help method became a model for other service centers. When I retired in 1996, the N-SHOPP annual budget was $100,000. Under new leadership, N-SHOPP is in its forty-second year with a budget of $1 million. Two of my essays were published by The Humanist magazine, “Overcoming a Heritage of Prejudice” and “Why Are So Many Black Americans Killed by the Police?” The online African American magazine, Politics 365, published my article, “Challenging Obama's Calmness.” The Dialogue of American Ethical Union included my thoughts on “When Progress is Unethical.” The theme was how to design progressive programs to avert a backlash. I served as chair of three social justice activist groups: The Lower East Side Call for Justice, which I led for 20 years, participated in movements that improved the criminal justice system. And under its letterhead, I initiated and conducted a campaign to require police to be unarmed when drinking heavily. It was adopted in major U.S. cities and became a federal law. Often with a Black professional co-leader, I conducted 250 workshops with teens, young adults, gays, parents, and community center directors on what to do when stopped by the police. The city funded my handbook, “Dos and Don’t When Stopped by the Police,” three times. The message: Do not take on the police on the street even if provoked. We then described how we won convictions of police who killed innocent people with non-violent/civil disobedience. As chair of my subsidized co-op association and vice president of the board, I was credited with unseating members of an autocratic, corrupt board, and I provided evidence to a redistricting commission that Chinatown should be expanded miles eastward to cover our co-op. Since then, our district has elected more Chinese- American representatives. With information from my fellow residents, I had car thieves and drug dealers removed from our co-op and streets. As chair of the Ethical Action Committee of the New York Society for Ethical Culture (NYSEC), I was credited with playing a crucial role in passing paid sick leave. In recognition of my activism, I received the 2010 Community Service Award from NYSEC, my philosophical home. INTRODUCTION Apathy is a fundamental threat to life on Planet Earth. To eliminate epidemics, climate crises, and fascism we must find a cure for humanity’s chronic condition --passivity National leaders agree that action is needed regarding the climate crisis, the economy, and Trumpism/Putinism. The Paris Agreement, COP 22, the 15 percent minimum tax on corporations and international support for Ukraine’s moral courage in defense of liberty are revealing. They show an awareness that emergency measures must be taken globally to overcome existential threats. The exception was the “Our Nation First” policy when facing the COVID-19 pandemic. Why has there been little follow-up on so many areas of agreement? Let us count the ways: · Martin Luther King Jr. stated, “The arc of the moral universe bends toward justice.” He knew and demonstrated that the hand of the moral universe needs help in bending the arc. · Many say it is useless to enact clean energy legislation while China is increasing coal mining. · We are in a natural cycle of ice and warming ages. · God indeed has a pan to cool the oceans. · No matter what happens on earth, we can look forward to entering the pearly gates of heaven. · If we control the pandemic in our city or nation, the COVID-19 virus will stop evolving. · Evolution favors the survival of the fittest, and I am among the fittest. My question: Whatever your belief, why not take out an insurance policy? We have the means to bend the moral arc toward our survival, all who follow us, and the ecosystem that sustains us—and even the fittest need a thriving ecosystem. In that spirit, I propose how nations can organize, strategize, and mobilize a planet-wide rescue mission whenever we face an existential threat. As the world is changing faster than I can write, I assume some of my proposals may have already seen the light of day. However, I hope that the basic framework of this paper remains a model for acting to keep the “Blue Dot” aglow with life and laughter in the night sky. OUTLINE SUMMARY TO SAVE THE HUMAN The Vast Majority Must: · Be able and willing to take vaccines or medications during an epidemic. · Help slow global warming. · Realize that the thin outer layer of our body does not determine our status. · Accept all humans as members of the human species. · Acknowledge that our tribe or nation is not granted dominion over others. · Seek territorial conflict resolution. · Those with lots to spend share with those with too little to spend.[KS1] [AM2] · Care for our children, the forgotten, and the hidden. · Congratulate oneself when feeling the pain of growth. · Hold all to account[KS3] for unforgivable injury to others. · Accept uncomfortable truth. · Be in awe of the miracle of life.[KS4] · Understand that settlement on another planet as uring as the Earth is presently unattainable. · Wonder at the majesty and mystery of the night sky. · Identify with scientific search to explain existence. · Embrace a mission for the human species: survival from existential threats and discovery to sustain survival. A MISSION FOR THE HUMAN SPECIES: SURVIVAL AND DISCOVERY “Einstein had what might be called a night-sky theology, a sense of the awesomeness of the universe that even atheists and materialists feel when they gaze up at the Milky Way.” – Louis Menand, The New Yorker I am calling for a mission of survival from existential threats and discovery of the origin of the night sky, a mission I call the “Ultimate Quest” or “UQuest.” We must survive as a species long enough to discover how a universe approaching infinite complexity arose. I will attempt to make the case, usually dismissed at first sight, that the UQuest can, in time, help unify our species and help sustain survival. Scientists have stated that the human brain is the most remarkable combination of molecules observed in the universe. We have the intelligence, imagination, and competence to survive as a species. The question is whether we are willing to bring out the best in each other long enough to learn how we got here and how we can stay here. To prevent the sixth extermination of life on Earth and the first that will include humans, we need a global strategy: whenever our species and ecosystem are threatened, we must mobilize an international rescue force. The notion that local or national action alone can contain and eliminate planet-wide threats is unrealistic. A formidable obstacle is that national leaders would commit political suicide if they wavered from a “my nation first” policy. We must give up the fantasy that we can live comfortably with our family, clan, tribe, and nation while the world is ablaze and out of control. The good news is that we can establish a vital, compassionate, healthy, ethical, and equitable world. We have no other choice than to embrace a species-wide mission of survival that is sustainable and declare ourselves citizens of one world. Although we may feel incapable of expanding our kinship circles to include every member of our species, we must learn to accept each other as citizens of a world community, capable of global mobilization when necessary. Examples are climate change, pandemics, and the fascism of Trumpism/Putinism[KS5] . National action alone was dangerously slow in implementing the Paris Accord and COVAX, the United Nations’ program “to accelerate the development and manufacture of COVID-19 vaccines and guarantee fair and equitable access for every country in the world.” Trumpism/Putinism threatens our ability to slow global warming. When will we realize that a viral pandemic, global warming, and Trumpism/Putinism cannot be addressed successfully without a warlike mobilization? Even if we defeat pandemics and climate change, we need unifying strategies to sustain life. The UQuest can, in time, rank high. While the search for the spark that ignited the night sky may seem best left to astrophysicists, allow me to disagree and argue that an awakening of the awe of existence will, in time, have a growing unifying impact. In this regard, Emma Stone, Ph.D., in Psychology Today wrote, Recent studies … have discovered compelling connections between the experience of awe and enhanced critical and creative thinking faculties, improved health, embeddedness into collective folds, and an increase in pro-social behaviors such as kindness, self-sacrifice, cooperation, and resource sharing. … Experiences that arouse awe can help us re-conceptualize our sense of self, our role in society, and our place in the universe from a cosmic perspective. In addition, courtesy of Sky and Telescope, William Shean of the Dark Sky Association noted that Awe, which is what motivates us to do astronomy, is only recently getting its due from psychologists. Less familiar than the “big ten” (love, fear, sadness, etc.), it has been called the eleventh emotion. Humans may be the only species that can feel it, and some people may never experience it. Others, however, are intimately familiar with it and know the accompanying tingling of the spine. This is an argument, in my view, for making astronomy—and exposure to other aspects of “wilderness”—central to child development schemes and educational core curricula. Suppose we encourage awe, astronomy's core emotion. In that case, we will not only invite children to a lifelong passion for investigating the universe but encourage them to embrace kinder, more caring communities on Earth. Why is the UQuest so important? If acceptance increases, we may see ourselves under the banner of a species-wide mission. Imagine the sensation if exoplanetary life is discovered? Isn't it possible that we will realize that most people marvel at the same magic-like phenomena with each dramatic, scientific breakthrough explained in lay terms? Max Tegmark, associate professor of physics and science director at MIT, said on PBS' Closer to Truth that we will “eventually understand how the universe began.” He was interviewed by Robert Lawrence Kuhn, the host/physicist, who agreed by saying that we are learning at such a rapid rate, it is likely that we will uncover the ultimate mate Let's collaborate!
