The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is the United States government agency responsible for the nation's civilian space program and for aeronautics and aerospace research. NASA was established on July 29, 1958, by the National Aeronautics and Space Act, which was signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The agency was created in response to the Soviet Union's launch of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik, in 1957, which marked the beginning of the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union. Artemis Program: NASA's current focus is on the Artemis program, which aims to land "the first woman and the next man" on the Moon by the mid-2020s.
