Over the last few weeks, I have seen a large number of animal videos on my social media feeds, and questions about how to write video descriptions for animal videos on social media. From penguins wandering around an aquarium to people’s dogs smiling at the camera, I love that more and more accounts are sharing adorable animal content, even though many of these videos are difficult for me to see with low vision. Here are my tips for how to write video descriptions for animal videos on social media for blind and visually impaired audiences.

A person who loves animals is often very empathetic toward them, enjoys being around them, and feels a pull to help them when they can. They may also have at least one pet, or perhaps many, and find great joy in their company. According to a recent study by criminologist Jack Levin, people tend to generate empathy for suffering animals because of their perceived helplessness and vulnerability, rather than their species. This natural affection for animals can be compared to the affection we feel for our children. We impulsively care for them and desire to help them because they are unable to easily help themselves
