Four Chicken Yard Projects - Reduce Stress, Reduce Feed Budget, and Improve Security
TheReturnHomesteadI spent the day thinking about chickens. Most days, Chickens require very little direct attention. In the early morning, I open the coups to let them out for the day, scatter some scratch grains around to give them a kick start, refill water containers, top off the feeding tubes, and then close the coups at night. The chickens do their part to reduce bug populations, improve garden soil, and provide eggs. Today, they need extra attention to reduce the rooster pressure on the hens, add a protein source to the pasture, minimize feed waste, and increase predator safety. _______________________ Drankin Song by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1500021 Artist: http://incompetech.com/35 views -
Harvesting and Garden Maintenance: Green Beans, Tomatoes, and Squash
TheReturnHomesteadSummertime is harvest time. Yes, we have more green beans, and the tomatoes are starting to ripen. Wait till you see the squash we are harvesting. Pest pressure is taking a toll on our beans, but they are mostly played out for the season. The Japanese Beetles are feasting on the leaves, which keeps them off of the other plants that are still growing. Soon the beans will be replaced with some field peas and brassicas as we head into the Fall. The tomatoes are ripening but slowly. We have a fungus that is stressing the plants and killing some branches. We could not maintain a proper course of periodic preventative treatment and will now have to do some heavy pruning to save the plants or at least extend their growth for a few more months.50 views -
3 Ways to Stop a Broody Hen
TheReturnHomesteadHens sometimes decide to brood when the homesteader would prefer that they not. If you want to grow your flock stick as many fertilized eggs as you have under the broody hen. At The Return Homestead we have all the chickens we need for this year, so we want to stop any broody behavior. The daily egg tax means a broody hen has not eggs that will eventually hatch. If she continues on the nest she could starve herself, so we need to break them of just sitting all day. Nutmeg chose herself as the next queen of the coop after we moved Momma in with the Spring Chickens. We moved Momma to stop her from brooding and we hope that will be a good solution for Nutmeg as well.21 views -

DIY Drywall Mud - Screws, Seams, & Corners
TheReturnHomesteadWe hung the drywall, and now we need to get the mudding started. This is level 1 mudding out of 4 levels. Make sure the screws are fully set. Get the mud hydrated. Take your time, and don't try to do perfectly on the first step. _________________________ Open Road by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Artist: http://audionautix.com/ _________________________27 views -
Easiest Way to Paint the Laundry Room
TheReturnHomesteadTexture is on the wall and we need to seal it with a good layer of paint. Nothing fancy here, just doing the work to spread the paint. We decided to use a roller for the walls instead of an airless paint sprayer. The sprayer would have finished the room in minutes, but taken an hour or so to setup and clean up. We will apply two coats of paint to the walls, and the texture on the ceiling needs a little deeper nap on the roller. Anyone can do this to transform any space. _________________ Lazy Day by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Artist: http://audionautix.com/ Tennessee Hayride by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Artist: http://audionautix.com/ Open Road by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Artist: http://audionautix.com/8 views -
Homestead Approach to Finishing Drywall
TheReturnHomesteadTime for Level 2 on the drywall mud. Within the construction industry, drywall finishing is broken into 4 levels. This provides contractors a way to discuss the work and the costs associated with each level, to provide clear expectations for their customers. We borrow their language for our drywall projects but we do not hold ourselves to the same expectations as we would a contractor when it comes to finishing the walls. We can do this any way we want to, and so we do. We plan to level out our level 1 mudding effort with another layer of mud. After sanding we will apply the texture and move on to painting. For today's video, we demonstrate the way we sand our level 1 mud and how we apply the level 2 mud.23 views -
Take Down Trees that Threaten Your Home
TheReturnHomesteadChainsaws are dangerous and useful. I enjoy making sawdust and today there is lots to make. We want to take down all the trees threatening the guest house. We would hate to finish the remodel and loose the house to a falling tree. The land the trees cover will be useful for orchards, and gardens. Assessing the risks of using a chainsaw is no simple task. Do your homework. Understand how the saw works and you can use it safely. Today I am going to share some of my thoughts and techniques for sharpening the chain, creating a safe cutting zone, protecting the user, and guiding a tree's fall.27 views -
YouTube Shadow-banning 4 this Video - Working in the Garden
TheReturnHomesteadYouTube is shadow-banning our channel and it started after we posted this video. We were growing the channel at breakneck speed until July 4th when we released this video. The next day our impression rate was reduced to a 10th of what it was. And all of our videos now top out in the first two days before flat lining on impressions.192 views 2 comments
