Stanleyville, located in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was a significant urban center during the colonial period. Named after the explorer Henry Morton Stanley, who played a prominent role in the European exploration and colonization of Central Africa, Stanleyville served as a major administrative, commercial, and transportation hub within the Belgian Congo.
