Storm Hurler – Studies from the Book of Jonah
Life Over CoffeeMy prayer is that God will bless you through the reading of this book. Suffering is our constant companion as we make our way to that great city on the other side of this storm. Jonah is representative of all of us who tends to fear the unknown outcomes of life. I am thankful the Lord placed his story in our Bible. I hope you will be able to glean from this work, which is my feeble attempt to tell his story relevantly. To God be the glory, even when He hurls a storm at us. Rick Thomas, Running the Bases, a Faith-based Movie
Life Over Coffee@runningthebasesmovie inspired me to try this challenge to see who can make it around the bases the fastest! Go see this life-changing movie in theaters September 16th and prepare for God to rock your world through its powerful message! I clocked in at 25:54 seconds! I’m challenging anyone who has the gumption and game to a little friendly competition - see if you can beat my time! RUNNING THE BASES is a beautiful story that takes you on a journey with a man of faith and his love for the game of baseball. When this small-town baseball coach gets the offer of a lifetime from a larger 6A High School, he uproots his family and leaves the only home he's ever known. But as a man of faith, he soon faces extreme opposition to his coaching methods from the school superintendent. Throughout the film, you will experience the beauty of restoration, the surprise of God’s provision, and the majesty of His love. My Office Set-Up For an Online Career
Life Over CoffeeHere is a brief look at my office set-up, where I serve folks globally via the Internet. I've been doing this work since 2008, and though my office changes to do new ways of "doing business," this glimpse will give you a "to-date" look, though I did add a teleprompter to the office, which is not in this video. Calibrating Yourself to Others
Life Over CoffeeHave you ever encountered a person with a "big personality?" He walks into the room, and all eyes are on him. You sense the "temperature of the room" going up as his energy begins to affect the space. These personality types are great for parties but horrific in discipleship contexts. Life Over Coffee exists to bring hope and help for you and others by creating resources that spark conversations for transformation. They can rejoice with the rejoicers and weep with the weepers. They don't "speed up a person" by making the individual "keep up with their personality." Contrariwise, they are not "Debbie downers," where they bring their disciple to a lower place of despair than they are currently. They are wise counselors who have self-control and wisdom. Self-control – They can "manage their emotions," so their personality is not controlling the disciple. Wisdom – They can discern the person they are caring for and adjust themselves to exactly be what they need at that moment. Discipleship is not just about giving the best advice, but it's also the right kind of personality for the person who is receiving the care. This article about "micro-rhythms" talks about the importance of calibrating yourself to the individual with whom you're bringing soul care. Every discipler cannot do this because it's a gift from the Lord. This gift is one of the things that I look for when training our students. Are they able to calibrate their personality, speech, demeanor, and words to the person in front of them?14 views -
Dangerous Backward Looks Into Your Past
Life Over CoffeeSometimes some people can spend too much time trying to figure out why they are the way they are. There are two recurring and insistent questions with these folks: Why am I the way that I am? How did I get this way? Life Over Coffee exists to bring hope and help for you and others by creating resources that spark conversations for transformation. Helpful Links Would you please help keep our resources free by donating here: http://bit.ly/2ggwJTF. But if there is a temptation to spend too much time thinking about what happened to you or why you are the way you are, it could lead you into a trap. You want you to guard against doing a deep-dive into the granular levels of the "why question." Sometimes we can look for answers for "why" we are the way we are or "how" we got this way, and it preoccupies too much of our mental space when it would be better to "just repent." Acknowledge that these things are historical struggles, and ask the Lord to give you empowering favor (grace) at those acute moments of temptation to overcome them. Rather than drowning in the "why question," practice repentance. You don't have to know all the details of how you got to this place. It's wiser to focus more on the "renewing your mind" and "putting on Christ" than pondering your "former manner of life." See Ephesians 4:22-24 There can be an element of self-reliance in trying to know all the reasons why when God is calling you to step out in faith by trusting Him with your sanctification. At some point, the "complexity of our depravity" will remain a mystery. I'm not saying you should not explore your fallenness to root out your "former manner of life," but there is a balance to keep in view. Most folks have enough information about who they are and how they got to this point. E.g., Adam's fall, dad's abuse, my choices. The key idea here is not to wallow in granular thinking of your depravity by always looking in the rearview mirror, trying to figure out what happened. Be more forward-thinking than backward-thinking; have a plan for repentance so you can change your future. And that "plan" is to know how to combat these historical problems as they happen, which will give you the "spiritual muscles" to defeat them, which will become more natural with more practice. Practicing daily repentance is better than any investigatory work about why you are the way you are. For example, when the fear of man begins to wrap it's depraved tentacles around your heart, as soon as you sense this happening, have a pre-packaged plan to respond. Immediately!! And the more times you can do this "at the moment," two things will happen: 1. You'll get better at repenting. 2. The temptations will go away eventually, and you will experience more and more freedom.11 views
