Hunting

Floyd and I hit the woods before daylight and get in our respective stands. This is my first hunt. I've never been a hunter. In past years I always felt I didn't need to hunt or just wasn't interested. My perspective has changed over the past few years and that not only includes owning firearms but also hunting and being able to provide for my family if necessary. I am hoping to bring my audience the real deal experience of me (myself) hunting. I am sure I will make plenty of mistakes and I'm sure there is much to learn. Floyd is experienced and has his own way of doing things. With his guidance I hope to learn and experience many skills and techniques that I need to succeed as a hunter. I'm back in the climbing stand as Floyd and I try make something happen. Gusty winds make things interesting. I'm starting to think I'd rather be on the ground behind a deer blind or something like that. Floyd and I are starting to make progress after putting out corn, apples and a mineral block. We need the deer to keep coming in here to the field. We know there are a lot of deer in this area and it's just a matter of time before one of us gets one. Today I am in a blind that Floyd and I made out of two wood pallets. This is a welcome change from the climbing stand. I finally get a good opportunity. I am back in the pallet blind and Floyd is in the box stand. We finally have success. Just when we thought we wouldn't see any deer about 6 or 7 doe came out between Floyd and I. I could not take a shot because they were in his direction. Floyd waited until he could see them clearly before he took his shot. We found her after searching for blood in the field and just inside the woodbine. Our friend we work with, Kruz, joins Floyd and I for the first time. Floyd and I put out corn and apples before I hunt in the pop up ground blind for the first time. I had have never been inside one before and I thought it was really cool. I wouldn't mind having one to camp in with a small wood stove. I'm sure there are larger ones available. Interesting thought to say the least. It is the last couple days of deer season and I finally get done what I set out to do from the start. Do I care about antlers and/or taxidermy trophies? No, I don't. Actually, I take that back. Deer hides, antlers and many other parts of the deer can be very useful for many things. Now, after this experience, I can put a check in the box that says I know the basics of how to hunt deer for food if it ever came down to a necessity. My first year of hunting has given me a little bit of knowledge of hunting and I learnt how to skin and process my kill. Having Floyd as a mentor with his old school approach and knowledge is priceless. Am I going to be a hard core hunter? Probably not. Will I continue to hunt? Probably. Will I film another deer season hunt? Probably not. Do I know everything about deer hunting or hunting in general? Absolutely not. I hope you enjoy watching my experience of killing my first deer.
