4.4.2005 Carolina v Illinois (THSN Sync - Woody Durham + Postgame)
Native ContentWhen legendary Coach Dean Smith suddenly retired just weeks before the start of the 1997 season the North Carolina Tar Heels knew replacing a Hall of Fame coach wouldn't be easy, if at all possible. UCLA never replaced Wooden. Kentucky has from time to time found temporary stewards for Rupp. With a season about to embark, UNC looked to long-time assistant Bill Guthridge to take on the program, but being a little long in the tooth himself, it would certainly be shortlived. During Coach "Gut's" tenure, ACC Conference play did not produce staggering results, but in four seasons he led Carolina to two Final Fours. Not bad at all. When he retired Carolina tapped former player and 1982 National Champion Matt Doherty, who in his first year was AP National Coach of the Year. But in year two, things went south finishing with just 8 wins in 28 games. They somewhat recovered in year three with a dynamic recruiting class, but the damage was done. That's when Roy Williams left Kansas to come home. In just his second year at the helm in Chapel Hill Roy Williams had molded Matt Doherty's recruits, added Marvin Williams, and took them to a National Championship game against the highly touted Illinois Illini. The game was dubbed "The team (Illinois) versus the talent (Carolina). In the end talent was the team to beat and Roy Williams finally got his first of three National Championships. Carolina Blue on Screen: If you notice different blues from our graphics versus the broadcaster's graphics on the screen note this. North Carolina athletics, my love, has had color durability and consistency issues from a marketing perspective for years. We use Nike’s version of Carolina Blue, hex code 85ADEA for all UNC video content on this channel because it matches the uniforms, shoes, court, etc. You will notice ESPN and indeed other media outlets use the branding standard hex code 7BAFD4 the Tar Heels publish but it does not match virtually anything other than Carolin's marketing guide and the basket supports in the Smith Center. The discrepancies you see with the content on this channel are not my own but North Carolina’s inability to commit to one blue. We will remain consistent with the 85ADEA color for matching purposes. 3.25.2005 Carolina vs Villanova (THSN Synced + Pregame & Postgame)
Native ContentEvery National Championship team has a little hiccup on the march to a title. For the 2004-2005 Tar Heels, they narrowly escaped with a win against Villanova in a tightly contested game. And the win didn’t come without some officiating controversy either, but the Heels prevailed nonetheless. 03.06.2005 Carolina v dook (THSN Sync - Woody Durham)
ChapelHeel80Tar Heels win on Senior Day against dook. The situation late was eerily similar to the one the Tar Heels faced earlier in the season in a 71-70 loss at Duke, when they couldn't get off a shot in the final seconds. This time, with the Heels down and time running out, Raymond Felton drove to the basket and was fouled by "Angel Eyes" Nelson. He swished the first free throw to make it 73-72. His second bounced high off the rim, and after a brief scramble for the ball, Marvin Williams grabbed it and quickly shot over Duke walk-on Patrick Johnson. The shot banked in as he was fouled, and his free throw capped the furious rally to win the game after being down 9 with just 3:05 to play. Notes: CBS completes the FSU game before cutting over to the Carolina game. Right before halftime, the Tar Heels Sports Network suffers technical difficulties forcing local station to cut to music briefly.
