How Do You Assess and Prepare a Future Pastor for Ministry?
Life Over CoffeePastoral ministry is one of the more complex vocations a person could choose. We all have our stories. We know the statistics, the burnout rates, and the aftermath of a failed pastor. But there are more of them who do it well. Extremely well. The successes far outshine the failures, though we hardly talk about those doing it the right way. Goodness is not as tweetable as badness, but it’s worth asking; what makes a good pastor? What are some things you should look for in a potential pastoral candidate? When Aging Parents No Longer Walk with God
Life Over CoffeeI would love for you to do a video on how we, as Christian adults, can deal with our aging parents when they let us down and commit egregious sins. My husband and I have a parent who just left another wife for no reason other than he was tired of being married to her. We’re having a hard time, primarily because we have lost all respect for his dad. We have always thought he was a believer, but he quit going to church and shows no remorse for abandoning his wife. Five Common Mistakes Abuse Counselors Make
Life Over CoffeeThere are some issues where it creates emotional tension if you speak honestly and transparently from two contrary perspectives. We tend to be on one side or the other. Fair and balanced becomes lost with some of our causes. Sometimes we don’t want to cede any aspect of our talking point out of fear: “If we admit their argument has valid elements, we lose ground on our perspective.” Other times folks will overcorrect because of past injustices, i.e., the reparation effect. Regardless of the reasons, we must work at being fair about our problems, and there are few things more vital for this kind of scrutiny than talking about abuse. How Can a Christian Sin Like That and Say He’s a Christian?
Life Over CoffeeThere are times when our behaviors do not align with God’s Word. There are several reasons for this. James suggested a person could be double-minded. Jesus talked about hypocrisy in Matthew 23. Truthfully, all of us have sinned as Christians. For some, it’s an intentional habit, which makes one wonder if they are a Christian. For others, it’s a life-long struggle with patterns that they fight fiercely. Thus, answering the question, how can a Christian sin like that have a complexity worth our time exploring? The Ten-Step Process to a Hard Heart
Life Over CoffeeThe process of a hard heart begins when we want something so much that the desire for that thing starts to manage our minds. It’s not that the desire is evil, but it controls us so much that we lose sight of the God-centered, God-managed life. Even good desires can send us down the wrong path. If we don’t change our thoughts about the things we want, the end of this process leads to a hard heart, as Rick explains. The Four Types of Transformative Listening
Life Over CoffeeIn the last three Life Over Coffee episodes, I talked about the danger of the biblical counseling movement passing its prime. In the last one (Episode 425), I mentioned a few practical solutions that could help change our current course positively. (Those podcasts stirred a lot of conversation in the biblical counseling world.) One of the reasons I mentioned a “passing the prime” possibility is that there has been a lack of innovation in the movement over the past two decades. In this episode, I will share with you one—of many— ways we can innovate by maturing in our understanding and practice of listening in counseling contexts. Seven Ways Biblical Counselors Can Innovate
Life Over CoffeeMy last two Life Over Coffee episodes (423 and 424) are a response to different perspectives in the biblical counseling movement regarding its future. I stated part of the problem in our movement is that there is a lot of redundancy and little innovation. Some folks took issue, offering what they believe to be innovation from their perspectives. In this episode, I aim to clarify what I mean by innovation, how it differs from a few others, and a path forward. Four Reasons the BC Movement Has Passed Its Prime
Life Over CoffeeThere is a difference between biblical counseling and the biblical counseling (BC) movement. Biblical counseling is a modern word for New Testament discipleship, God’s way of doing soul care. The BC Movement has been a vital means for elevating the need for every Christian to “counsel” others, and their usefulness has been substantial. But their relevancy has declined for many years. I will give you four reasons why.
